Historical Description
REYDON is a parish and scattered village adjoining Southwold on the north-west, the church being about 1 ½ miles distant from Southwold terminal station of the line from Halesworth and 8 east from Halesworth, in the Northern division of the county, Blything hundred, petty sessional division and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of North Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Margaret is a building of flint, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, about 65 feet high, with pinnacles and containing one bell: the interior was restored in 1876, at a cost of £420, when a new east window was inserted: there are 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1686. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with Henham and the vicarage of Wangford, joint net yearly value £150, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Stradbroke, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Arthur John Patrick MA. of Wadham College, Oxford, who resides at Wangford. At the inclosure of the parish, in the year 1800, an allotment of 22 acres was awarded to the poor and is let at a yearly rental of £18, which is distributed in coal. Reydon Hall, now the residence of the Rev. John Norris Frederick Ewen MA. is a structure of some antiquity, and since about 1860 has undergone considerable alteration architecturally, the oldest part forming the east wing bears the date 1682, and the letters T.E. in iron, presumed to be the initials of Thos. Ewen, then owner; it was for some years occupied by the Misses Strickland, the well-known authoresses of the “Queens of England,” and other popular works, their father having purchased it in 1808 of the then representatives of the family of the present owner, but it was re-purchased by the Ewen family in 1886. The Earl of Stradbroke is lord of the manor and impropriator of the great tithes, commuted at £403 yearly. The principal landowners are the Earl of Stradbroke and Rev. J. N. F. Ewen MA. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,729 acres; rateable value, £2,715; the population in 1891 was 352.
