Historical Description

RISBY is a parish and village, near the high road from Bury St. Edmunds to Newmarket, half a mile north from the Saxham station on the Bury and Newmarket section of the Great Eastern railway, about 4 miles west-by-north from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Thingoe and Thedwastre petty sessional division, union and hundred of Thingoe, county court district of Bury St. Edmunds, rural deanery of Thingoe, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Giles is an ancient edifice of flint, principally in the Decorated Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and western embattled round tower containing 3 bells: a carved screen divides the nave from the chancel: there are tablets to the Danby, Wastell and Sparke families: Sir Edward Hall Alderson kt. baron of the Exchequer, who died 27 Jan. 1857, was buried here, but his remains and tomb have since been removed to Holdenby in Northamptonshire: a stained window was erected in 1886 to the Rev. Thomas Edward Abraham MA. rector (1863—86). by his children, and at the same time the organ was renovated at a cost of £60: another stained window was placed in 1898 to the Rev. Thomas Palmer Abraham, rector (1886—97), and a lych gate has been erected in memory of his father and his son: the church was reseated in 1863, and affords 250 sittings. The register dates from about the year 1674. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400, with residence and 13 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Edward Symonds MA. of Exeter College, Oxford. There are some small charities, which are distributed by the Parish Council; also 150 acres of land, upon which the poor of the parish have a right to cut furze for firing. There are several barrows in this parish. Here is a village club and reading room, well supplied with books and newspapers. John Wood esq. of Hengrave Hall and the Messrs. Burrell are chief landowners. The soil is sandy and mixed; subsoil, gravel, clay and chalk. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 2,818 acres; assessable value, £1,592; the population in 1891 was 400.

National School (mixed), built in 1865, to hold 120; average attendance, 60: endowment in Consols brings in £29 a year.
