Rushbrooke, formerly the, beautiful seat of the noble family of the Jermyns, Lord Dover, but now belonging to Sir Charles Davers, Bart.

RUSHBROOKE is a parish on the east bank of the river Lark, 1 ½ miles north-east from Whelnetham station on the Sudbury and Bury St. Edmunds railway and 3 south-east from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Thingoe and Thedwastre petty sessional division, Thedwestry hundred, Thingoe union, county court district of Bury St. Edmunds, rural deanery of Horningshearth, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Nicholas is a small building of stone and flint in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the chapel in the south aisle and the chancel contain several monuments of the Jermyns, and there are marble monuments to the Rushbrooke family in the south aisle, and tablets to the Davers and Moyle families: over the communion table is a stained window: the pulpit and nave are richly decorated with oak carvings: there are 200 sittings. The registers date from the year 1568. The living is a rectory, consolidated with that of Bradfield St. George, net yearly value £412, with 14 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Bristol, and held since 1884 by the Rev. George Fuancis Turner MA. of Trinity College, Oxford, hon. canon of Ely and J.P. Suff. who resides at Bradfield St. George: the Rev. Robert Gibson B.A. rector of Little Whelnetham, has been curate since 1894. The almshouse here was rebuilt in 1700, and endowed by Thomas Lord Jermyn for four poor persons, who are allowed 2s. per week, with a supply of firing yearly, arising from a yearly rent-charge on the family mansion of the Marquess of Bristol, in St. James' square, London, and from land in Bury St. Edmunds; the charity is in the hands of two trustees, viz.:-Rev. G, F. Turner MA., J.P. & R. W. J. Rushbrooke esq. Here is a lake of 6 acres, used for boating, fishing and skating. Rushbrooke Hall, the seat of Robert Wyndham Jermyn Rushbrooke esq. is a splendid moated mansion, standing in a well-wooded park of 150 acres; it forms three sides of a quadrangle, the front facing the south; the east wing was built in the reign of King John; the west wing belongs to the Elizabethan period; the entrance hall contains many trophies of arms: in the east wing are the dining-room and other apartments: the library is in the west wing, where many old manuscripts and paintings of the early masters are preserved: passing through this apartment, the drawing-room is reached where Queen Elizabeth held her court in 1578, and it contains some of the furniture used at that time, which is in good preservation: adjoining is the old Catholic chapel, now used as a billiard room, near to which is the royal chest, where the richly embroidered day and night dresses of the Pretender are preserved: the grand staircase, leading to the royal and other bedrooms, is hung with tapestry. R. W. J. Rushbrooke esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clay and chalk; subsoil, chalk and loam. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,051 acres of land and 12 of water; assessable value, £726; the population in 1891 was 136.

The children of this parish attend little Whelnetham. school.
