Historical Description

RUSHMERE (near Lowestoft) is a parish and village in a quiet valley, 3 ½ miles south-west from Carlton Colville station on the Beccles and Lowestoft branch of the Great Eastern railway, 6 south from Beccles and 5 south-west from Lowestoft, in the Northern division of the county, Mutford and Lothingland incorporation, petty sessional division and hundred, Lowestoft county court district, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Michael is an old building of flint with stone dressings, in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a round western tower with thatched roof containing 2 small bells: in one corner of the nave is a deep and lofty recess for the banners and crosses formerly used in processions: the church was repaired in 1846, when oak open seats were substituted for the pews: there are 96 sittings. The register dates from the year 1719. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £134. with residence and 6 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord Boston and Mrs. F. W. Irby jointly, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Lancelot Wm. Hale Andrews MA. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here are sand-pits. The trustees of the late Richd. Hy. Reeve esq. of Lowestoft, are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Edmund F. M. Barlow esq. Hy. Reeve esq. John Oldrin esq. of Beccles, and Capt. Reeve R.N. of Lowestoft. The soil is loamy; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, roots and hay. The area is 761 acres; rateable value, £705; the population in 1891 was 154.
