Historical Description
RUSHMERE ST. ANDREW (near Ipswich) is a village and parish, 2 miles from Westerfield station on the Great Eastern railway, 2 ½ from Ipswich and 6 south-west from Woodbridge, in the South Eastern division of the county, Woodbridge petty sessional division and union, Carlford hundred, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Carlford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 vict. c. 73), that part of the parish situate within the liberties of the borough of Ipswich was created a separate parish by the name of " Rushmere” only, the remainder of the parish retaining its former title, and that portion forming the new parish of “Rushmere” has been transferred from the Woodbridge to the Ipswich union. The church of St. Andrew, rebuilt in 1861, is an edifice in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with north aisle, nave, aisles, and an embattled western tower, with emblems of the Evangelists at the angles, and between these four pinnacles, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the tower, a work of the early part of the 16th century, was erected from a bequest in 1521 by Catherine Cayde, widow, who desired that the “new steeple” should be “of like fashion, bigness and workmanship with that of Tuddenham:” the south doorway is Norman: the north aisle, a later addition, is separated from the nave by an arcade of two arches springing from one semi-Norman column; the eastern end of the aisle forms a vestry and organ chamber; the organ was erected in 1882; the arrangement for the pulpit and reading-desk, consists partly of a dwarf stone screen, which separates the nave from the chancel, by the side of which a separate prayer-desk and lectern are placed, and on a higher level is fixed a desk for the pulpit; the front panel of this part of the screen is adorned with a sculptured representation in high relief of St. Andrew bringing his brother, St. Peter, to Jesus: opposite, in the north wall, is a carving of the “Ascension,” erected in memory of the Rev. John Edge Daniel: the open oak benches have the finials of varying design, mostly of natural foliage, and on the elbows are kneeling figures of angles, holding scrolls or musical instruments, the two nearest the door bearing one a representation of the tower of the church and the other a model of the chancel, the respective gifts of Mrs. Cayde in 1520, and of the late Marquess of Bristol in 1861, and the arms of these donors, emblazoned on zinc, are let into the woodwork: the whole of the windows are stained, two being memorials to Frederick William, 2nd Marquess of Bristol, Patron and Benefactor, d. Oct. 30, 1864: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1582. The living is a vicarage, gross net yearly value, including 36 acres of glebe and residence, £141, in the gift of the Marquess of Bristol, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Arthur Wollaston Gray M. A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Baptist chapel. The Marquess of Bristol is lord of the manor of Rushmere Hall, and Capt. E. G. Pretyman M.P. of Orwell Park, Lord De Saumarez, of Shrubland Hall and R. L. Everett esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops; are wheat, barley, beans and peas. The area is 2,184 acres; rateable value, £2,400; the population in 1891 was 416.
National School (mixed), built in 1846, and enlarged in 1894, has now accommodation for 140 children; average attendance, 116.
