Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
SHELLY (or Shelley) is a parish and village, 3 miles south from Hadleigh terminal station and 3 south-west from Raydon station on the Hadleigh branch of the Great Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Samford, county court district of Hadleigh, rural deanery of Samford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The river Brett, which is not navigable, has its rise at Brettenham, and flows through the village. The church of All Saints is an ancient structure of rubble in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with chapel on the north side, nave, south aisle, porch and tower on north side containing 5 bells, and having a good entrance through the base, angular buttresses and two lights in the upper stage: most of the windows in the chancel have been stopped up: the east window is Perpendicular: in the north wall of the chancel are the remains of an old tomb bearing no date, and in the chancel a sort of high pew with a canopy of wood of late date, but with good panelling: in the chapel, which is very Late, are some Elizabethan monuments; some very fine bench ends still remain, and also the base of the rood screen: in the nave is a monument of the Tilney family, bearing the date 1598: during the years 1882 and 1883 the church was restored at a cost of about £380; the old pews were removed and replaced with solid oak benches, the fronts facing the chancel being filled in with the old linen fold pattern panels; the benches in the chancel retain the figures of griffins supporting shields bearing the arms of the Tilney family, and have also old oak poppy heads: the restoration was chiefly due to the Misses Taylor, of Shelly Hall, who collected the greater part of the subscriptions. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1790; marriages, 1754; burials, 1747. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £40, with 40 acres of glebe, in the gift of James Winter Brittain esq. of Gifford’s Hall, Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Joseph Calvert B.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, who is also vicar of and resides at Holton St. Mary. The principal landowners are J. W. Brittain esq. of Gifford’s Hall, Stoke-by-Nayland, and Mrs. Arnold. The soil is clay; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 912 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £794; the population in 1891 was 91.
