The church of St. Bartholomew is a building of flint and stone, in the Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave, north porch and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing one bell: the church was thoroughly repaired in 1856, when the old thatched roof was removed, a high-pitched slated roof substituted and the interior entirely reseated with open oak benches: in 1899 the roof was repaired and tiles substituted for slates: there are sittings for 120. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a discharged rectory, net yearly value £145, with 27 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Rev. Robert Alfred John Suckling, vicar of St. Alban’s, Holborn, London, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Jas. Halliburton Young MA. of Trinity College, Cambridge. A yearly rent-charge of 10s. was left for the benefit of the poor by F. Wormall in 1709. The union house for the hundred of Wangford in this parish is an extensive building holding about 350; the chapel, erected in the grounds in the year 1866, at a cost of about £600, from designs by the late G. E. Street R.A. is a red brick building with apse and three stained windows, and is seated throughout with open benches: a cemetery was consecrated in the same year. For particulars of union see Beccles. The Rev. Robert Alfred John Suckling, of St. Alban’s Clergy House, Holborn, London, is lord of the manor. The principal landowner is William Francis, and there are numerous small proprietors. The soil is mixed; subsoil, sandy. The chief crops are wheat, turnips and peas. The area is 819 acres; assessable value, £681; the population in 1891 was 223, including officers and inmates of Wangford union workhouse.

The children of this place attend the school at Barsham.
