A fortification, mounting 14 heavy Armstrong guns, commands the entrance of Harwich harbour. A pier was opened in 1894, from which passengers can embark for Harwich, Felixstowe &c. The church of St. Mary is a large edifice of stone standing on an eminence, and consists of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles and a south porch: the prevailing style is Decorated, but the clerestory is a fine specimen of Perpendicular work: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1567. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £380, with 54 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Bristol, and held since 1866 by the Rev. Two cottages, for two aged couples, were erected by subscription on land given by C. W. Berners esq. to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, 1897. Here are extensive brick and the works. The Marquess of Bristol, who is lord of the manor of Overhall-with-Netherhall, and Chas. Hugh Berners esq. of Woolverstone Park, are the principal landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 2,042 acres of land, 664 of tidal water and 416 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,614; the population in 1891 was 580.

National School (mixed & infants), erected in 1853, for 50 children, since enlarged to hold 170 children; average attendance, 140; the site of half an acre & a donation of £50 towards its erection was given by the Marquess of Bristol.
