Historical Description

Snape, a village, which had formerly a monastery of Black Monks, founded in the year 1155, by William Martel, Alfred his wife, and Jeffery Martel; their son. It was first made a cell to the Abbey of St. John, in Colchester, but afterwards became, in a manner, independent, it paying only half a mark as an acknowledgment; but the abbot of Colchester might visit them twice a year, and stay there four days with twelve horses. King Henry the Eighth gave this monastery to the canons of Butley, but it was dissolved by the bull of Pope Clement the Seventh, and given to Cardinal Wolsey, and after his death was granted to Thomas, Duke of Norfolk. At the dissolution, its revenues were valued at 99l. 1s. 11d. a year. Friston formerly belonged to Snape priory. Sir Henry Johnson having purchased the said priory and its appurtenances, built Friston-hall, and made it his seat. His daughter and heiress marrying the Earl of Strafford, this delightful seat passed into that noble family.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SNAPE is a parish and village 3 ½ miles south-by-east from Saxmundham station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft line of the Great Eastern railway, and 5 ½ west from Aldborough, in the North Eastern division of the county, Plomesgate union and hundred, Blything petty sessional division, county court district of Framlingham and Saxmundham, rural deanery of Orford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. John the Baptist is an edifice of flint and rubble in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of presumed Saxon date, containing 3 bells: the font is old, and has sculptured figures on its sides: the church was restored in 1864, at a cost of £300, and affords 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1544. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Friston, joint net yearly value £150, in the gift of T. F. C. Vernon-Wentworth esq. and held since 1877 by the Rev. Bowland Garrard Moffat L.Th, of University College, Durham. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1862. A sum of £200 was given to this parish by the late Rev. John Lambert, the interest of which is annually distributed at the discretion of the Parish Council amongst poor householders who have not received any parochial relief during the preceding year. In the parish are sand and clay pits and brick earth. There are also here two barrows, or tumuli, examined by the late S. Davidson esq. of Aldborough, and found to contain various antiquities, consisting of rings, coins and early British and Roman urns, now in the possession of A. J. Swinburne esq. of the Priory. Near the village are the remains of the priory of St. Mary, founded in 1155 by W. Martell, as a cell to that of Colchester, and transferred to Butleigh priory in 1508; at the Dissolution it was valued at £99. Skeletons, coins and other relics have been occasionally exhumed on the site. The principal village, termed “Snape Street,” is about one mile south of the church, and about a quarter of a mile distant is Snape Bridge, so named from a bridge of one arch over the river Alde or Ore, which is navigable to this place. The opposite bank of the river is in the hamlet of Dunningworth and the parish of Tunstall. At Snape Bridge there is a station for goods only on, a branch of the Great Eastern railway. A horse fair is held here annually on the 11th of August. T. F. C. Vernon-Wentworth esq. of Aldeburgh Lodge, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of A. Borrett esq. and W. E. Long esq. of Hurts Hall, Saxmundham, are the chief landowners. The soil in some parts is good mixed, and in others light and sandy; subsoil, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and roots. The extent of land is 1,981 acres, 30 of tidal water and 123 of foreshore; rateable value, £1,694; the population in 1891 was 546.

Grumford is a hamlet of this parish, half-a-mile south-west.

National School (mixed), adjacent to Snape church, erected in 1835 & enlarged in 1879, for 200 children; average attendance, 113.
