Historical Description

SPROUGHTON is a parish and village on the river Gipping, 1 mile south from Bramford station on the Ipswich and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway and 3 north-west from Ipswich, in the South Eastern division of the county, Samford union, petty sessional division and hundred, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Samford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints is an ancient pile of flint, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock with chimes, given by the congregation in commemoration of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, 1897, and 6 bells, one of which is a new treble bell, presented by the rector and his children in memory of C. L. Foster-Melliar, late wife of the rector, and has been entirely restored: in the chancel are two stained windows, one being a memorial to the Rev. Edward Gould, rector from 1836, and there are several other memorial windows. The register dates from the year 1541. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £309, with 13 acres of glebe and residence, but subject to a payment of £50 to the vicar of Playford, in the gift of the Marquess of Bristol, and held since 1885 by Rev. Andrew Foster-Melliar MA. of New College, Oxford. Here is a village club and reading room. The poor have a yearly charge of 26s. out of a field, supposed to be at Whitton, left by an unknown donor, but a difficulty having arisen in the collecting of this charge, the matter was placed in the hands of the Charity Commissioners, who, however, have failed to substantiate the claim. Elizabeth Bull, in 1618, left a cottage, to be occupied by two deserving poor widows. The Chantry, the property of Mrs. Skinner and at present the residence of Capt. Sir William Cecil Henry Domville bart. C.B. was built in the beginning of the last century by E. Venturis esq. and was subsequently the seat of the late Sir Fitzroy Edward Kelly kt. Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer (1866—80); it stands on an eminence, commanding prospects of Ipswich, the vale of the navigable Gipping and surrounding neighbourhood: the grounds, shrubberies and flower gardens are tastefully laid out; here is a fine lake called Beech Water, several acres in extent, and surrounded by beech and other trees. Maj. Robert Phillipps J.P. is lord of the manor; Mrs. Skinner and a few small proprietors are the landowners. The soil is of a mixed nature; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and peas, and there is fine meadow land. The area is 2,163 acres of land and 18 of water; rateable value, £4,649; the population in 1891 was 560. In 1894 that portion of the parish in Ipswich boroukgh was added to the parish of St. Mary Stoke, Ipswich.

National School (mixed) & house were built here in 1851, for 100 children; the foundation stone was laid by the Bishop of Norwich; average attendance, 67.
