Historical Description

STANTON is a village 6 ½ miles north-west from Thurston station on the Bury and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway, 9 north-east from Bury and 3 north-east from Ixworth, in the North Western division of the county, Blackbourn hundred and petty sessional division, Thingoe union, Bury St. Edmunds county court district, rural deanery of Blackburne, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely: it formerly consisted of two parishes, All Saints and St. John the Baptist, but they are now amalgamated and are known as Stanton. The church of All Saints is an edifice of flint in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and a western tower containing a clock and 4 bells: the church was restored in 1875: in the south wall of the aisle is a piscina, a stoup and an arched canopy, probably the burial place of the founder of this portion of the edifice: in the south wall of the chancel are piscina and sedilia: a new organ was erected in 1887: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1584. The church of St. John the Baptist, now used for funerals only, is a structure of flint in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave and an embattled western tower built upon two arches, facing north and south, and containing 4 bells. The register dates from the year 1579. The livings are consolidated rectories, net yearly value £470, with 31 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Robert Emlyn Lofft esq. J.P. and held since 1865 by the Rev. Henry Swan Dudding MA. of Hertford College, Oxford. Here are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The Fuel Allotment consists of 43 acres, the income from which is expended in coals for the poor of the parish. Robert Emlyn Lofft esq. of Troston, is lord of the manor; Arthur Maitland Wilson esq. of Stowlangtoft Hall, and William Blake esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 3,189 acres; assessable value, £2,554; the population in 1891 was 791.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 12 August, 1874; Robert Simkin, clerk to the board.

Board School, built in 1877, at a cost of £1,250, for 150 children; average attendance, 132.
