Historical Description

Stow-Upland, the adjoining parish, is of large extent, and contains a number of good farms. There is no church, or chapel of ease, in this parish, but the vicarial tithes are paid to the vicar of Stow-Market. The parishioners attend divine service at the above parish church, where they also meet for settling parish business.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

STOW UPLAND is a parish on the eastern acclivity of the Gipping, opposite Stowmarket; it includes Stowmarket railway station, and forms a pleasant suburb to that town, extending 4 miles east, in the North Western division of the county, Stow hundred and union, petty sessional division and county court district of Stowmarket, rural deanery of Stow, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1843, at a cost of about £1,500, on a site given by the late Charles Rayner Freeman esq. is an edifice of white brick in a plain Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower with spire containing one bell: there is a carved oak pulpit: the church affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1844. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £102, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Stowmarket, and held since 1899 by the Rev. George Maddock Shallard MA. of Oxford University. Here is a Congregational chapel. The Green, or Common, is very extensive. Stowmarket Gas Works are situated within this parish and near the railway station. Columbyne Hall, an ancient house surrounded by a moat is now occupied as a farm house. There are three manors, viz. the manor of Columbyne Hall, of which the Earl of Ashburnham is the lord; Thorney Hall, of which the trustees of the late Lieut.-Col. W. R. Tyrell are the lords; and Thorney Lezens with Thorney Mumpliers and Braziers, of which the Rev. Edward Josselyn Beck MA. rector of Rotherhithe, Surrey, is the lord. The Earl of Ashburnham, the trustees of the late Lieut.-Col. Tyrell, Messrs. C. & J. Marriott and Henry Fairfax Harwood esq. of Tuddenham Hall, are the chief landowners. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and clover. The area of the parish is 2,879 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £8,494; the population of the parish in 1881 was 1,170, and of the ecclesiastical parish of Holy Trinity, 973.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 8 February, 1875, for the united district of Stowupland & Creeting St. Peter; Thomas E. Carter, clerk to the board.

Board School, enlarged & teachers’ residence added in 1876 at a cost of £950, for 200 children; average attendance, 175.
