Historical Description

STUTTON is a parish and village on the north bank of the navigable Stour, 3 miles south-east from Bentley station on the Colchester and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway, 8 south from Ipswich and 7 north-west from Harwich, in the South Eastern division of the county, Samford hundred, petty sessional division and union, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Samford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The Sudbury river flows through the northern part of the parish. The church of St. Peter is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, with aisle, nave, north transept and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: in 1875 the chancel was entirely rebuilt and a north aisle added: the pews in the church and chancel were removed and carved open sittings substituted in 1846, at the sole expense of the Rev. Canon Thomas Mills MA. rector from 1821: it contains several monuments to the Jermy and other families: the windows are mostly stained, and there are 300 sittings. The date of the earliest register is 1645. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £136, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Parry-Okeden, of Tamworth, Blandford, Dorset, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Thomas Hill Jones B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. The poor's land, of 1 acre, has been sold for a sum that now produces £6 10s. yearly; and there are the dividends on £100 £3 per Cent. Reduced Annuities, for coals. There are six almshouses, erected in 1863 in memory of the Rev., George Baker, formerly of this parish. Stutton Hall, a mansion in the Elizabethan style, now the property and residence of Jas. O. Fison esq. and thoroughly renovated in 1892, was erected by Sir E. Jermy knt. and is remarkable for its ornamental brick chimneys and gateway. Crowe Hall, the property and residence of Col. Jas. Colquhoun Reade J.P. was formerly the seat of the Smyth family, who obtained the property by intermarriage with the family of Bowes: the house was repaired by George Reade esq. who purchased the estate in 1821, and added a drawing room, finished in the style of Henry VII.'s chapel in Westminster Abbey, and commanding views of Harwich harbour and the ocean. Crepping Hall, formerly the seat of the Wingfields, is now the property and residence of William Isaac Graham esq. Alton Hall, the property of Roger Kerrison esq. of Tattingstone, and now occupied by Mr. William Clarke, farmer, is a large mansion. James O. Fison esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Roger Kerrison esq. of Tattingstone Place, William Isaac Graham esq. Col. J. Colquhoun Reade and the Mills family. The soil and subsoil are various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,294 acres of land, 166 of tidal water and 988 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,636; the population in 1891 was 542.
