Historical Description

SUDBORNE (or Sudbourn) is a village and scattered parish between the navigable rivers Alde and Ore, and extending near to Aldborough, 6 miles south-east from Wickham Market station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, and 12 east from Woodbridge, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred and union of Plomesgate, petty sessional division and county court district of Woodbridge, rural deanery of Orford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints is a small but ancient building of flint with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, small transepts, nave, north and south porches and an embattled western tower with small spire containing one bell: the chancel contains a monument with kneeling figures to Sir Michael Stanhope, a former owner of the land, and beneath the communion table is a vault belonging to the Hereford family; the fabric of the church was entirely restored internally and externally, and a new organ presented in 1879 at the expense of the late Sir Richard Wallace bart. K.C.B. under the superintendence Of Mr. F. Barnes F.R.I.B.A.: the stained east window, placed in 1879, is a memorial to Maria, wife of Francis Charles, 3rd Marquess of Hertford K.G. d. 1856: the transepts were added and a new roof fixed in the same year; during the restoration several interesting discoveries were made, including upwards of 2,600 coins, belonging to the reigns of King John, Henry II. and III. and William the Lion, King of Scotland, found in the nave, immediately under the floor: a piscina in the chancel, some old floor tiles of Suffolk make, and a fine Norman doorway were also met with, on the south side: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1621. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Orford annexed, joint net yearly value £340, with 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Edward Maude Scott, who resides at Orford. Sudborne Hall, a plain mansion of red brick, standing in a park of 300 acres, is the residence of Arthur Herbert Edwd. Wood esq. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner: it was much improved and enlarged by Sir R. Wallace. Beds. of oysters have been found in making excavations near the church. The strata of crag is largely intermixed with shells and other fossil remains, so much so as to make them of considerable value as manure, when carted on to and mixed with the surface soil. The soil is very various; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas and roots. The area is 4,878 acres of land, a great portion of marsh, 28 of water, 263 of tidal water and 136 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,916; the population in 1891 was 568.

Keer’s Grove is half a mile north-west.

National School (mixed), was erected with master’s residence in 1875, for 100 children; average attendance, 71.
