Historical Description

SUTTON is a parish and village, on the east bank of the river Deben, across which is a ferry, 4 miles south-east, or by ferry 2 ½ from Woodbridge station of the Great Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, Wilford hundred, Woodbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Wilford, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints is an ancient structure of flint in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and south porch, and has a stained east window to Robert Knipe Cobbold esq. and others to the mother and children of the Rev. William Nixon: there is an ancient carved stone font and a handsome Derbyshire alabaster reredos: the south porch was erected in 1877 in memory of Mrs. Mary Theresa Vidal: the church was restored in 1859 and 1860 and affords 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1665. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £250, with residence and 34 acres of glebe, in the gift of C. H. Sargant esq. and held since 1884 by the Rev. Edward Dennis Rock B.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Here is a Baptist chapel. The charities are of the yearly value of £9 4s. On the Sutton Hall estate two urns were dug up a few years ago, which contained copper coins of the reign of Constantine. Wood Hall, about 1 ¼; miles from the church, a fine old manorial house, and the property of Mrs. Waller, is at present unoccupied. The principal landowners are Mrs. Waller, of The Grove, Little Bealing, who is lady of the manor, Lord Rendlesham, Sir Cuthbert Quilter bart. of Bawdsey, the trustees of the late Thomas Lomax Walford esq. and Charles Austin esq. of Brandeston Hall, Wickham Market. Part of the land is agricultural and part heath. The parish is rich in antediluvian shells and fossils, numerous in the crag deposits; there are also extensive diggings of coprolites. The soil is sandy, rich loam by the river side; subsoil, sand and crag. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 5,445 acres of land, 90 of tidal water and 439 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,084; the population in 1891 was 500.
