Historical Description

SYLEHAM is a small village and parish on the south side of the river Waveney, which here separates this county from Norfolk, and is crossed by a bridge connecting this place with Brockdish in Norfolk, 6 miles east from Diss station on the Ipswich and Norwich section and 4 south-west from Harleston (Norfolk) station on the Waveney Valley section of the Great Eastern railway and 6 north-east from Eye, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hoxne hundred, petty sessional division and union, county court district of Harleston, rural deanery of Hoxne, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of flint and stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a round embattled western tower containing 3 bells: in the chancel is a memorial to Anthony Barry esq. d. 1741 and a mural tablet to Mrs. B. Lambe, d. 1735: the tower was restored, new roofed, and the bells re-hung in 1883: in 1891 the church was new roofed and re-seated throughout, the walls and chancel arch restored and a stained east window added: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £49, with 13 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Miss Annie H. Fairbrother, of Syleham Hall, but pro hac vice the Bishop of Norwich by lapse, and held since 1882 by the Rev. James Munro Tate MA. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a large water and steam mill for the manufacture of linen drabbets and ready-made clothing, belonging to the Syleham Drabbet Company. Syleham Hall, a handsome mansion standing in pleasant grounds, is the residence of Miss A. H. Fairbrother, the mansion anciently belonged to the de la Poles, Earls of Suffolk. Sir Hugh Edward Adair bart. of Flixton Hall, who is lord of the manor, and Miss A. H. Fairbrother are the principal landowners. The land is a mixed soil, and a great part is marshy. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and turnips. The area is 1,607 acres of land and 8 of water; assessable value, £1,047; the population in 1891 was 234.

The Parish School is closed & the children of this parish attend the schools at Hoxne, Brockdish & Wingfield.
