Historical Description

TATTINGSTONE is a parish and village 1 mile east from Bentley station on the Colchester and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway, and 5 ½ south-west from Ipswich, in the South Eastern division of the county, Samford hundred, petty sessional division and union, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Samford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a large building of rubble in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel and nave, north and south porches, and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1654. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £28 7, with 38 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Elliott, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Charles Lister Boileau Elliott B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. A cottage and one acre of land are appropriated to the use of the parish clerk; the donor is unknown. Here is a crag, in which many antediluvian remains have been found. The Samford union house in this parish is a large plain red brick building, erected about 1765, for 400 inmates; for particulars of union, see Ipswich. Tattingstone Place, a large brick mansion, standing in a well-wooded park, and containing a large lake and extensive fishponds, is the property and residence of Roger Kerrison esq. MA., J.P. who is lord of the manor and principal landowner: it was anciently the seat of the Beaumont family, but was purchased about the middle of the last century by T. White esq. who rebuilt it. The soil is mostly light; subsoil, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 1,637 acres; rateable value, £1,874; and the population in 1891 was 515, inclusive of 85 officers and inmates in the Samford Union House.

National School (mixed), built in 1841, at the expense of the late rector & Sir T. B. Western bart. with a gift from the Diocesan Society, for 100 children; average attendance, 80.
