Historical Description

THORNDON is a parish and village, abounding in picturesque views, 3 ½ miles south from Eye terminal station on a branch of the Great Eastern railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Hartismere. Eye county court district, rural deanery of South Hartismere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints, erected in 1300, is a structure of flint with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel and nave of the same height and width, and an embattled tower on the south side containing 6 bells, through which is the entrance: the church was newly roofed and the chancel restored and beautified in 1866 by the Rev. W. H. Glover, a former rector, at a cost of about £800, when a new communion table and beautifully carved wood reredos, representing the Last Supper, were erected by Julia Mary and Robert Bridges, in memory of their brother Edward: in 1873 a carved oak lectern was presented to the church by the Rev. T. Faulkner Lee D.D. rector 1872—8: a new organ was erected in 1881 at a cost of £140: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1535. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £447, with 73 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Margery Reynolds, and held since July, 1878, by the Rev. Seymour Baylie Reynolds' BA of St. John’s College, Oxford. The village contains a fire engine, provided by subscription in 1844. The town estate comprises a farm-house and premises and a cottage in Thorndon and 94a. 2r. of land in Thorndon, Occold and Wetheringsett; the rents, amounting to £100 yearly, are divided into three parts-one-third for the poor, one-third for school purposes, and one-third for improvements in the parish. The church fund of £30 is applied to the repairs and services of the church. The poor have 40s. a year from Lee’s Charity and a yearly rent-charge of 40s. left by one Cullum, charged on an estate now belonging to Col. Nathaniel Barnardiston esq. of the Ryes, Sudbury. The parish is in four manors-Little Thorndon, of which Col. N. Barnardiston is lord; a small manor belonging to the rectory; and Thorndon and Hestley Hall, of which the Rev. Frederick Lawson Hayward LL.B, of Tunstall Rectory, is lord. The chief landowners are Lord Henniker, Lady Bateman, of Broome Hall, Messrs. Hayward, Frederick G. Hayward esq. of Weatherall House, Hampstead N W, Col. N. Barnardiston and the trustees of the Hemsworth family. The soil is mixed clay; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley &c. The area is 2,650 acres; rateable value, £2,424; and the population in 1891 was 618, including 95 officers and inmates of the Reformatory School.

Parochial School (boys & girls), erected on the site of the old workhouse, at a cost of £450, raised by subscription & voluntary rate, & was opened in January, 1874, for 120 children; average attendance, 94.

A Reformatory for boys was established here in 1856 by the late Sir E. C. Kerrison bart. & was taken over by the county in 1887, & it now contains the full complement of 84 boys, who are employed on the land: there is also a class of boys who learn shoemaking.
