Historical Description

THURSTON is a parish and village, with a station on ithe Bury branch of the Great Eastern railway, 90 ½ miles from London and 4 east from Bury, in the North Western division of the county, Thingoe and Thedwastre petty sessional division, Thedwastre hundred, Stow union, Bury St. Edmunds county court district, rural deanery of Thedwastre, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. Contiguous to the railway station is a small eminence, called “Thedwastre Hill,” which gives its name to the hundred.-The church of St. Peter is a fine edifice of flint and stone in the Decorated style, rebuilt in 1861, and consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: there are memorial windows to the daughters of the late James Bunbury Blake esq. to James Bunbury Blake esq. d. 1874, and to J. Case esq.; and tablets to the Oakes, Stedman, Bright and Smith families: the church affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1707. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £200, with 80 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Sir. E. W. Greene bart. and held since 1697 by the Rev. Robt. Wm. Barber MA. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. The local charities, amounting to about £27 annually, derived from land, are distributed in coals. Warren’s charity of 12s. 10d. yearly, is given to poor widows at Christmas, and Bright’s charity of £1 13s. 4d. is annually given in clothing to the aged poor. Thurston Cottage is the residence of Major Arthur Faulconer Paulton. Sir Edward Walter Greene bart. of Nether Hall, Pakenham, is lord of the manor. Col. Montague Charles Browning C.B. of Brantham Court, and the representatives of the late P. Huddleston esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and chalk; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and turnips. The area is 2,200 acres; rateable value, £3,457; the population in 1891 was 644.

The district comprises the parishes of Ashfield Magna, Badwell Ash, Beyton, Drinkstone, Elswell, Felsham, Gedding, Hessett, Hinderclay, Hunston, Langham, Norton, Rattlesden, Rickinghall Inferior, Stowlangtoft, Thurston, Tostock, Walsham-le-Willows, Wattisfield & Woolpit.

Meetings are held at the Board Boom, Market place, Stowmarket, monthly, on Thursdays at 1 p.m.

National School (mixed), erected in 1869, to hold 120 children; average attendance, 87.
