The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel has a piscina, and on the floor is a large memorial slab to Elizabeth, Countess of Rochford, d. 23 June, 1746: on the floor of the nave aisle is a brass to John Haughfen, d. 29 Sept. 1618: in the porch is a mutilated stoup. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, with that of Dunningworth annexed, joint net income £372, with 48 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1862 by the Rev. Fredk. Lawson Hayward LL.B, of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The Particular Baptist chapel at Tunstall Common, built in 1805, has since been enlarged, and now has 550 sittings. Here are clay and sand pits. At Snape Bridge in this parish are the extensive maltings and wharves of Messrs. Newson Garrett and Son Limited. The Earl of Guilford is lord of the manor, and the principal landowners are Lord Rendlesham, the Hon. William Lowther, of Ashe High House, Campsea Ashe, and the rector.
