The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £78, with 32 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Church Patronage Society, but pro hac vice the Bishop of Norwich by lapse, and held since 1882 by the Rev. William Roddam Tate, Theol. Assoc, of Kings College, London. The Congregational chapel, or “Old Meeting House,” is the oldest in the county, having, according to “Neile’s History,” been established in 1647: there is an endowment of land and house, also residence for the minister, and burial ground: a Sunday school is held in connection with the chapel. The Primitive Methodists also have a chapel here. Neale’s charity of £3 yearly is distributed to the poor. Lord Huntingfield, who is lord of the manor, and Miss Tatlock, of Bramfield, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and mixed; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, peas and roots. The area is 1,750 acres; rateable value, £1,312; and the population in 1891 was 393.
