Historical Description
WALSHAM-LE-WILLOWS is a parish and large village, 5 ½ miles south-west from Finningham station on the Ipswich and Norwich section and 5 ½ north from Elmswell station on the Bury and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway, 12 north-east from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Blackbourn hundred and petty sessional division, Stow union, Bury St. Edmunds county court and bankruptcy court district, rural deanery of Blackburne, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The village is lighted with oil lamps, the expenses being defrayed by subscriptions. The church of St. Mary is a large structure of flint, in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, north porch and a fine embattled western tower, with pinnacles and a small spire and containing a clock and 6 bells: an ancient screen fills the chancel arch: the roof of the nave is of open timber works: the terra-cotta reredos, the work of the celebrated modeller Tinworth, represents “The Last Supper”: there are several monuments to the Hunt, Wilkinson and other families and two stained windows: the pulpit and reading desk were given by Miss E. Wilkinson and the brass lectern by Miss Finetta Hale: in 1878 the interior of the church was thoroughly restored, the chancel new roofed and decorated and the old pews replaced by open oak benches, at an entire cost of about £2,000 of which £800, for the chancel, was given by John Martineau esq. patron and lay rector, who also in 1892 provided heating apparatus: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £223, including 62 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of John Martineau esq. and held since 1887 by the Rev. Charles Dickens Gordon, Theol. Assoc, of Kings College, London. The Baptist chapel was erected in 1866 near the site of the old chapel, and has a small adjacent burial-ground. The Congregational chapel was erected by the Wesleyans in 1844. There is also an iron chapel at Four Ashes for the Plymouth Brethren. The Cemetery, formed in 1890, is three-quarters of an acre in extent: the land was given by John Martineau esq. and there is a fine carved oak lych gate at the entrance. The cricket ground and pavilion were given to the parish by John Martineau esq. The Public Hall, erected in 1858, at a cost of about £360, is a structure of brick, used for parochial purposes, has a library and reading room, and is well supplied with books and daily and weekly newspapers. The town estate of 135a. 0r. 37p. of which 42 acres 1r. 1p. are let in allotments, and the old Guildhall and Town House, which is divided into tenements and inhabited by poor people, are vested in trust for the benefit and use of the inhabitants: the rents have for upwards of two centuries been applied for the use of the poor in providing coal, £30 to the churchwardens' expenses, and of late an annual contribution to the National school of £15; the other portion of the estate, comprising 82a. or. 32p. was formerly a part of Alwood common, and was inclosed in 1818 and let as a town farm, the rent of which is, by an Act of Parliament, applied in aid of the poor’s rate. Walsham Hall, an edifice of red brick, was restored and improved in 1896 at a cost of about £2,000 by the Church of England Society as a home for waifs and strays, the site being in part the gift of Bishop Wilkinson, it is now (1900) an industrial home for boys (certified), and is available for 40 boys. The Children’s Cottage Home, founded here in 1869, for 6 children, is supported by Miss Constance Martineau. The Grove, the residence of Mrs. Hale, stands in a park near the centre of the village. James David Powell esq. of Newick, Sussex, who is lord of the manor, John Martineau esq. of Park Corner, Heckfield, Hants, Arthur Maitland Wilson esq. of Stowlangtoft Hall, Charles Marriott esq. of Stowmarket, Mrs. Lock, Mrs. Hatten and Mr. Fenning, of Norton, are the principal landowners.
