Historical Description
The village of Walton, which had a strong castle, seated on a high hill, but it was demolished in the reign of Henry the Second; for the Earl of Leicester, landing with his Flemings in 1173, was received by Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, then lord of the manor and castle of Walton; on which account it was afterwards ordered, that this, with the other castles which had been kept against the above prince, should be levelled with the ground. A part of the foundation was to be seen about the year 1740, on a high cliff, at the distance of about a mile from the mouth of Woodbridge river, and was one hundred and eighty-seven yards in length, and nine feet thick. How much longer it was, could not be known, part of the south end being washed away; and since that time the sea, which is daily gaining upon this coast, has swallowed up the remainder. There can be no doubt but that Walton-castle was a Roman fortification: this is evident from the great variety of Roman urns, rings, coins, and other antiquities that have been found there. It is thought to have been built by Constantine the Great, when he withdrew his legions from the frontier towns in the east of Britain, and built forts or castles, to supply the Want of them. The coins that have been lately taken up in this neighbourhood, are of the Vespasian and Antonine families; of Severus and his successors, to Gordian the Third; and from Gallienus down to Arcadius and Honorius. This castle had the privilege of coining money, several of the dies for that purpose having been found. This town had a market, granted by King Edward the First, in the year 1288; but though the market cross is still standing, the market has been long disused.
WALTON is a village and parish at the mouth of the Orwell, about one-third of a mile from Trimley station on the Felixstowe branch of the Great Eastern railway, 4 miles north-east from Harwich, 10 south-east from Ipswich and 11 south from Woodbridge, in the South Eastern division of the county, Colneis hundred, Woodbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Colneis, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The village stands 1 ½ miles from the sea and 1 mile north from Felixstowe, and is much resorted to as a bathing place: here are many good lodging-houses.
A Local Board of 12 members was formed in 1887 for Felixstowe and Walton, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73) this place is now governed by an Urban District Council. Full particulars are given under Felixstowe. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone, in the Early English style of the 14th century, the building has been much injured by time, having lost its once fine tower and part of the chancel: a south aisle was added in 1860 and the west end of the nave restored in 1868, and in 1899 a new clock tower, containing one bell and memorial porch were added: a vestry was erected and the church entirely re-seated, and it now has 378 sittings, 187 being free. The register dates from the year 1550. The living is a vicarage, formerly annexed to Felixstowe, but separated in 1893, net yearly value £130, with 5 acres of glebe and residence in the gift of the Bishop of Sodor and Man and others, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Edward Symonds MA. of Merton College, Oxford. There are Free Methodist and Baptist chapels here. The Foresters’ Hall, in the High street, was erected in 1886. Captain E. G. Pretyman M.P. of Orwell Park, who is lord of the manor, and L. Morrison esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is mixed, with a subsoil of sand and crag, producing good crops of grain. The area is 2,013 acres of land, 8 of water, 336 of tidal water and 135 of foreshore; rateable value, £16,925; the population in 1891 was 1,923, and of the Felixstowe and Walton Urban District in 1891, 3,507.
A School Board of 5 members was formed 1 May, 1876, for the Walton and Felixstowe United District.
Board School (boys, girls & infants), for both parishes, built in 1878, at a cost of £960, and enlarged in 1893 for 560 children; average attendance, 130 boys, 125 girls, and 160 infants.
Board School (mixed), at Felixstowe Ferry, the extreme eastern point of the district, average attendance, 40.
