Historical Description

The village of Wangford, situated on the river Wang; it had a wharf, and give& name to a hundred. Here was a priory of Cluniac Monks, cell to Thetford, before the year 1160, said to have been founded by Doudo Asini, steward to the king's household, granted to the Duke of Norfolk. Some small remains of this monastery are adjoining the church. Near this place is Henham Park, in which stood a mansion-house that had been from the time of Henry the Eighth the residence of the family of Rous. The late Sir J. Rous had greatly improved it; but it was unfortunately consumed by fire in the year 1773.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WANGFORD is a parish and large village, 3 miles north-west from Southwold station on the Halesworth and Southwold railway and 6 ½ east-by-north from Halesworth station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft line of the Great Eastern railway, in the Northern division of the county, Blything hundred, petty sessional division and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of North Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. A stream, called the Wang, flows to the west of the parish, and forms its boundary. The church of St. Peter is an ancient edifice of flint in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, north porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: it contains several monuments to the Rous family: the chancel and vestry were added in 1875 by the late Earl of Stradbroke: the east window is a memorial (erected in 1876) to Charlotte Maria, second wife of the 1st Earl of Stradbroke, d. 15 Jan. 1856; the west window is a memorial (erected in 1887) to John Edward. Cornwallis Rous, 2nd Earl of Stradbroke, d. 27 Feb. 1886; the pulpit and reading-desk are elegantly carved and ornamented: the lectern was presented in 1883, in sometime M.P. for Westminster, by his nephew and nieces (Viseount Dunwich and the Ladies Rous): the organ was erected in 1881 at a cost of upwards of £800: organ was erected in 1881 at a cost of upwards of £800: the church was restored in 1865, at a cost of upwards of £1,500, and in 1893 a chiming clock was erected at a cost of £120: there are 565 sittings. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with Henham and the vicarage of Reydon, joint net yearly value £150, with residence and 10 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Stradbroke, and held since 1891 by the Rev. John Arthur Patrick MA. of Wadham College, Oxford. There are Church and Primitive Methodist Sunday schools, and a Primitive Methodist chapel: the church charities, amounting to £5 yearly, are distributed in money to the poor. To the south of the church formerly stood the Cluniac priory of SS. Mary, Peter and Paul, founded about 1160 by Eudo Assini, steward of the household to Hen. II.; it was a cell to the priory of Thetford and at the Dissolution had three monks, and revenues estimated at £30. The Earl of Stradbroke is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 896 acres; rateable value, £1,601; the population in 1891 was 565.
