The village is lighted with oil lamps, the expenses being defrayed by subscription. The church of St. Margaret is a small but ancient edifice, faced with pebbles, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north and south porches and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the east window and others are stained: in 1872 the chancel was restored at a cost of £207, and the nave at a cost of £900: in 1891 a new organ was erected, a stone pulpit presented by Alfred Youngman esq. and the church lighted with lamps at the expense of the present rector, the total amount expended being about £400: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1540. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £164, with 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the trustees of the Rev. George Garnons Bird MA. vicar of Hollinwood (Lancs.), and held since 1885 by the Rev. John Robinson, of St. Bees. The Congregational chapel, which had been erected about two centuries, was rebuilt in 1877, of red brick with stone facings, and cost £1,500. By an order of the Charity Commissioners, dated 26 Feb. 1897, the estate is now divided into two distinct portions, called respectively the “Ecclesiastical Charity” and the “General Charity”; the former consists of one-third of the yearly income, less expenses of management; the trustees being the rector and churchwardens for the time being, and the money is applied to church expenses. The “General Charity” is controlled by a body of nine trustees, of whom one, the rector, is ex-officio, four are elected by the Parish Council, and the rest are co-optative; the rents are expended in defraying the churchwardens’ expenses, salary of the parish clerk, a supply of coals to the poor inhabitants at greatly reduced prices, and for the general benefit of the parish: 3 acres of the estate have been allotted for a recreation ground, which is now (1900) let, the interest going towards the payment for the new ground, a field of 5 acres, purchased in 1897 under the new Act.
