Historical Description

WENHASTON is a parish and large village, on the navigable Blyth, with a station on the Southwold railway, 3 miles south-east from Halesworth, in the North Eastern division of the county, Blything hundred, petty sessional division and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of South Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Peter, standing on an eminence commanding a view of the sea, is a building of flint, erected at several periods between the 12th and 16th centuries, and consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western tower of the 14th century, about 62 feet high and containing 6 bells, the tenor weighing 16 cwt.: the east window was filled with stained glass in July, 1883, the stonework being the gift of the Rev. Richard Gathorne MA. vicar 1879—90, and the glass the gift of K. R. Hedges esq. of Sunbury, Middlesex, in memory of his brother: the chancel was restored in 1892, when a beautifully carved oak chancel arch was erected with canopies containing figures of St. Peter and St. Osyth: during the restoration of the chancel an antique painting on wood of the “Doom” or “Great Day of Judgment” was discovered, together with a sculptured representation of the “Holy Rood," of which only the outlines remained; the painting has been pronounced by the Society of Antiquaries of London, before whom it was exhibited, to be one of the most remarkable and best preserved relics of early 15th century art now in existence: the communion plate included a chalice with cover, dated 1567; and the church Bible, of the first edition of King James, handsomely bound with the brass bosses, still exists: the oak pulpit is a fine specimen of Jacobean carved work: there is a mural memorial with brasses to the Rev. Thomas Leman, d. 1826, and in the church is a list of vicars from the year 1217: the nave and aisle were restored in 1900: the church now affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1687. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £108, including 3 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1890 by the Rev. James Brown Clare B.A. of Jesus College, Oxford, who is also chaplain of the Blything Union There is a Wesleyan chapel, enlarged in 1865, and at Black Heath is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1868. 3 ½ acres of land were left in 1562 for the schooling of poor children, and 3 acres in 1563 for the same purpose; Widow Collin’s charity, £3 yearly, left in 1680, called “the Widow’s Gift,” is for six widows: the town estate, let for £50 a year, is applied to the service of the church: Dawson's charity is £6 yearly: the town estate poor’s charity of £2 yearly is distributed in coals. There are three several manors in this parish, besides that of Mells, i.e. Blythburgh Priory Manor, of which Sir Ralph Barrett Macnaghten Blois bart. of Cockfield Hall, is lord; Thorington Wimpole Manor, the trustees of the late H. A. S. Bence esq. lords; and the Thorington Hall Manor, held by the trustees of the late Richard J. Day esq. The trustees of the late H. A. S. Bence esq. the Earl of Stradbroke, the Rev. John N. F. Ewen MA. of Reydon Hall, Wangford, James Farquharson Remnant esq. M.P. 10 Norfolk crescent, Hyde Park, London W, and Major G. N. Micklethwait, of Taverham Hall, Norwich, are the principal landowners; but there are many smaller owners. The soil is light, a mixture of sand and loam; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 2,326 acres; rateable value, £3,061, the population of the parish in 1891 was 949.

Mells hamlet is 2 miles east-south-east from Halesworth, on the south bank of the Blyth. Here are the ruins of the ancient chapel of St. Margaret, an unadulterated specimen of Early Norman work, which in 1217 was subject to the mother church of Wenhaston, but subsequently and prior to 1465 the tithes of Mells were paid to Mettingham College; and the chapel, after that date, fell into disuse. Oswald Dawson esq. is lord of the manor. J. F. Remnant esq. M.P. and Arthur John Rouse esq. of Ipswich, are the principal landowners. The land is nearly all clay; subsoil, sandy.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 2 March, 1876; Charles H. White, Halesworth, clerk to the board & attendance officer.
