Historical Description

WESTLETON is a parish and village on the river Minsmere, 3 miles south-east from Darsham station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway and 6 north-east from Saxmundham, in the North Eastern division of the county, Blything hundred, petty sessional division and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of South Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of flint in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower with low steeple built on the foundations of the old tower, which fell down in 1770, and containing one bell: there is an Early English piscina in the chancel, and several monuments to the Woods family: the font is ancient, and has sculptured figures on its sides: the church was restored in 1857 at an expense of about £300, and again in 1866, at a cost of about £130: in 1891 the nave was repaired and renovated and the chancel reseated with new oak stalls, at a cost of about £400: there are 300 sittings. The registers date from the year 1545. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £213, with 1 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Church Patronage Society, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Francis Hamilton Nicholls MA. of Wadham College, Oxford. Major W. N. Micklethwait is the impropriator of the great tithes, which have been commuted at £690. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1868. Thomas Grimsby, in April, 1722, left about 12 acres of land, let for £12 a year, to provide clothing for poor widows and children of this parish. The church lands, of 18 ½ acres, are let in 72 allotments for about £22 a year, which goes towards the expenses of the church. There are four manors in this parish: Westleton with the members of which S. Patteson esq. is lord, Minsmere, of which Charles Capon esq. is lord, Westleton Cleves, of which Henry Edwin Garrod esq. of Diss, is lord, and Westleton Grange, of which George Frederick Beaumont esq. F.S.A, of The Lawn, Coggeshall, Essex, is lord. The Grange, pleasantly situated, and commanding a fine view of the common and its surroundings, is the property of Douglas Parry-Crooke esq. of Darsham House. The principal landowners are D. Parry-Crooke esq. Miles Barne esq. of Sotterley Hall, Sir Ralph Barrett Macnaghten Blois bart. and Mrs. Ogilvie, of Sizewell. The soil is loamy, sandy and clayey; subsoil, loam, stones and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, peas, roots, rye and potatoes. The area is 5,975 acres, of which 2,000 acres are sandy heath; rateable value, £4,028; the population in 1891 was 807.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Dec. 1887; Isaac Newson, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School (since 1888), built in 1842; a clock was erected over the porch in 1887; the school will hold 180 children; average attendance, 120.
