Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
WETHERDEN is a parish and village, 1 ½ miles east-by-south from Elmswell station on the Bury and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway and 4 north-west from Stowmarket, in the North Western division of the county, Stow hundred and union, petty sessional division and county court district of Stowmarket, rural deanery of Stow, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. At the western extremity of this parish is the division of the hundreds of Stow, Blackbourn and Thedwestry, and it also divides the liberty of Bury St. Edmunds from the Eastern division of Suffolk, as well as dividing the jurisdiction of the County Councils of East and West Suffolk, and the dioceses of Norwich and Ely. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of flint, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and a massive embattled western tower containing 5 bells, three of which were cast in 1673, one in 1786, and the tenor in 1702: the double hammer beam roof is of oak, elaborately carved, as also were some of the old seats, but in 1872 the church, with the exception of the aisle, was fitted with open oak benches: there is an ancient stone font, a brass and a mutilated monument in the aisle to one of the Sulyard family, who resided at Wetherden Hall, now a farm house: the church was restored and a stained window inserted in the chancel in 1861 by the late Rev. W. H. Crawford, of Haughley Park, and there are several other stained windows: the sittings number 300. The registers date from the year 1538, and are in excellent preservation. The living is a discharged rectory, net yearly value £280, with residence and 15 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Arthur Dimock MA. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is a small Baptist chapel. The town lands, 12a. 0r. 2p. are let at the present time for £21 10s. yearly, which sum is applied to the relief of the poor, principally in coals: the poor have also a rent-charge of 20s. yearly from the parish, which is given at the discretion of the rector: the sum of £1,500 was bequeathed ty the late Rev. W. H. Crawford, of Haughley Park, for the endowment of the school, erected by public subscription, and also a sum of £3,000 Consols, the interest to be applied for the maintenance of six poor widows. Harold Griffin esq. of 54 High street, Battersea, London S W who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late Mrs. Beare, Benjamin Brodie Booth esq. J.P. of Plashwood Park, Haughley, Mrs. Pretyman, F. J. Kerry, James Lambert and Sellsby Wardle Hunt esqrs. are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed loam, sand and clay; subsoil, gravel, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 1,830 acres; assessable value, £1,857; the population in 1891 was 450.
