Historical Description

WEYBREAD is a parish and large and pleasant village on an eminence, near the vale of the Waveney, on the borders of Norfolk, 2 ¼ miles south from Harleston station on, the Waveney Valley section of the Great Eastern railway, 9 east from Diss and 8 ½ north-east from Eye, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hoxne hundred, petty sessional division and union, Harleston county court district, rural deanery of Hoxne, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew is an edifice of flint in the Perpendicular and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a round western tower containing 6 bells, cast and hung in 1879: there are piscinae in the chancel and south aisle, and remains of the stairs leading to the rood loft: the organ was renovated in 1885 at a cost of £120: the pulpit is of oak, with painted panels: in the chancel are memorial windows to the Rev. Edward Philip Cooper, d. 20 Sept. 1855; Caroline Louisa, his wife, d. 29 Nov. 1864; to the Rev. Thomas Whitaker, 30 years curate, and vicar of this parish from 1814, d. 29 Dec. 1832, and Jane, his wife, d. 4 May, 1857: the church was restored in 1864 at a cost of £700, and affords 365 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged in 1892. The register dates from about the year 1687. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £80, with 10 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Rev. Joseph Henry White MA. rector of Brockdish, Norfolk, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Henry Seger Oriel MA. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The charities amount to about £21 5s. yearly, 25s. of which arising from the rent of land, is distributed in bread annually amongst the poor on New Year’s day and called Pitt’s dole; there is also a charity left by Miss Williams in 1854, producing about £20 yearly, which became available in 1892, and is distributed in coals amongst the poor: there are also 9 acres of land at Mendham, now (1900) let for £8 yearly, which sum is devoted to the benefit of the poor: Chancel Farm, of 17 acres, is let for £25 a year, which is available for the repairs of the church. Weybread Hall and Instead Manor House, two ancient mansions, have been converted into farm houses. The parish contains three manors, viz. Weybread, Hoblins and Instead; Daniel Richard Garner-Richards esq. is lord of the manor of the latter; Henry Edwin Garrod esq. of Diss, Norfolk, is lord of the Rectory manor. The landed proprietors are Sir Hugh Edward Adair bart. of Flixton Hall, and Mrs. E. L. Garrould, of Norwich. The land is of mixed soil, with clay subsoil. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, turnips and pasture. The area is 2,431 acres; assessable value, £2,156; the population in 1891 was 638.

National School (mixed & infants’), erected in 1842, for 150 children; average attendance, 100; attached are two good lending libraries, one for the parish, with about 1,000 volumes, & another of about 500, for the children.
