Historical Description

WHEPSTEAD is a parish and large scattered village, 3 ½ miles west from Whelnetham station on the Bury and Sudbury section of the Great Eastern railway and 4 ½ south-south-west from Bury St. Edmunds, in the Southern division of the county, Thingoe and Thedwastre petty sessional division, Thingoe hundred and union, Bury St. Edmunds county court district, rural deanery of Horn ingsheath, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Petronella is a structure of flint and stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western tower containing 5 bells, and has a stained window: there are 325 sittings. The registers date from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £440, with 6 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Oliver, of Epping, and held since 1857 by the Rev. Thomas James Steele, of St. Bees, and J.P. Suff. Here is a place of worship for Baptists. Thomas Sparks, in 1721, devised land (about 24 acres) for the education of ten poor children; the charity produces at the present time about £25 yearly: there is a charity for keeping the church in repair and other church purposes, producing about £48 yearly, besides several other small charities distributed to the poor. Plumpton Hall, about 1 ½ miles west from the village, and the property of John Henry Thornhill esq. is now occupied by Col. Edward Arthur Butler. Charles G. Hadleigh esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Marquess of Bristol, James Woodbine Johnson esq. and J. H. Thornhill esq. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans and barley. The area is 2,670 acres; assessable value, £1,569; the population in 1891 was 502.

Manston is a hamlet. George Mainprice esq. is lord of the manor of Manston and resides at Soham, Cambrdigeshire; this manor is mentioned in Domesday Book.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 1 December, 1873; Rev. Thomas James Steele J.P. clerk to the board.
