Historical Description

Wingfield, formerly having a castle which was a seat of the noble family that took their name from this village, before the Norman Conquest. The ruins of this structure denote its ancient grandeur.

About the year 1362 the executors of Sir John Wingfield, whose family has resided here several centuries, erected a college at the south-west corner of the church-yard, for a provost or master and nine priests. After the dissolution it was granted by Edward VI. to the Bishop of Norwich. The west side of its quadrangle was afterwards converted into a farmhouse. In the church of Wingfield was interred William de la Pole, whose murder of the good Duke Humphrey of Gloucester was so signally avenged in his own untimely fate. His head was struck off on the gunwale of a boat, and his body thrown into the sea; but being cast on shore, it was brought and buried in the Collegiate church here in 1450. His son and successor, John de la Pole Duke of Suffolk, Edward IV. was also interred here. His father was accused of having been concerned with the cardinal of Winchester in the murder before mentioned; and after the death of the other, as he governed every thing with uncontrolled sway, every odious and unsuccessful measure was attributed to him. He was charged with mismanagement, waste of the public treasure, the foul murder of Duke Humphrey, and the loss of divers provinces in France, with many other high crimes and misdemeanours, for which he was committed to the Tower. Though Queen Margaret interposed, and effected his release, the popular resentment against him was so strong, that to skreen him as much as possible, the king sentenced him to five years banishment. This was considered by his enemies as an escape from justice; and when the Duke left his castle at Wingfield, and embarked at Ipswich with an intention to sail for France, the captain of a vessel was hired to seize him near Dover; he was taken out to sea, and beheaded in the manner already specified.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WINGFIELD is a parish and pleasant village, 5 miles south from Harleston station on the Waveney Valley section of the Great Eastern railway, and 6 ½ north-east from Eye, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hoxne hundred, petty sessional division and union, rural deanery of Hoxne, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew is a beautiful structure of flint and stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with south chapel, nave with clerestory, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: in the chancel are three table monuments; one of which bears the effigies of Michael de la Pole, 2nd Earl of Suffolk, d. 14 Sept. 1415, at the siege of Harfleur; and Catherine, his wife, daughter of the Earl of Stafford: on another is the effigy of William de la Pole, Earl, Marquess and Duke of Suffolk K.G. lord high admiral; he married Alice, daughter and heiress of Thomas Chaucer, and granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer, the poet, and was beheaded off Dover on his passage to France in May, 1450, and afterwards interred here; on the third tomb are the effigies of John de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk K.G. son of the preceding, and the Lady Elizabeth Plantagenet, his wife, sister to Edward IV.; he died in 1491: there are also monuments to the Wingfields, formerly resident here, and one to the Rev. John Bicker, incumbent of this parish from 1832: the chancel and nave were restored in 1866 at a cost of £1,732; the church was further restored in 1879 at a cost of £1,100, when it was re-seated with open benches, and now affords 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £184, including 35 acres of glebe in the parish of Syleham, and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1877 by the Rev. William Salter Price F.R.G.S. The charities arise from 35 acres of land now (1900) let at £40 yearly, which sum is applied to the repair of the church and to other expenses, and about £1 is given to the poor in bread at Easter.

Within half a mile of the village are the remains of Wingfield Castle, once the seat of the Wingfield family, an ancient crenellated structure with towers and turrets and surrounded by a deep moat, the drawbridge still remaining; it is now the property of Sir Hugh Edward Adair bart. of Flixton Hall, and part of the fabric mantled with ivy, has been converted into a farmhouse.

The parish comprises two manors, of which Sir Hugh Edward Adair bart. and Lady Bateman, are respectively owners. The principal landowners are Sir H. E. Adair bart. Miss Fairbrother, of Syleham, the Dean and Chapter of Norwich and Philip Edward Sewell esq. C.E. of Norwich. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 2,441 acres; assessable value, £1,637; the population in 1891 was 466.

National School (mixed), erected in 1875, for 100 children; average attendance, 70.
