Historical Description

WINSTON is a parish and village standing on an elevated position, 8 miles west from Framlingham terminal station, on a branch of the Great Eastern railway, 13 north from Ipswich, and 1 south from Debenham, in the North Eastern division of the county, union of Bosmere and Claydon, hundred of Thredling, petty sessional division and county court district of Framlingham, rural deanery of Claydon, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andiew is an ancient building, faced with flint, in the Gothic style, and consisting of chancel, nave and a western tower with spire, containing 5 bells: the south door is Norman, richly carved, and there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £100, with 43 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are the impropriators of the great tithes, and held since 1871 by the Rev. Mundeford Alien Th. A. of Kings College, London. The Dean and Chapter of Ely, who are lords of the manor, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and Lord Henniker are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. Here are some extensive brick and the works. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and roots. The area is 1,476 acres; rateable value, £1,048; the population in 1891 was 285.
