Historical Description

WITHERSFIELD is a parish on the Cambridgeshire border, 1 ½ males north-west from Haverhill station on the Colne Valley section of the Great Eastern railway, an the Southern division of the county, Risbridge hundred, petty sessional division and union, Haverhill county court district, rural deanery of Clare, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a building of flint and stone, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with turret at south-eastern angle containing 5 bells: the chancel is Early English: the chancel arch and rood screen are of Perpendicular date: the screen towards the west has been repainted and gilded, but the carved work is very much fuller and richer in detail on the eastern face; over this screen was the rood, to which the following entry in Dowsing probably refers:-“Jan. 6, 1643. We brake down a cructifix and sixty superstitious pictures, and gave orders for the levelling the steps in the chancel:” the north aisle appears to have been built by one Robert Wyburgh, or Whybrow, and a small brass, set in a wooden frame and inserted in the wall near the east end, bears this inscription:-“Orate pro animabus Robert Wyburgh et benefactorum suorum, qui istam ylam (aisle) fieri fecerunt:” the rest of the church is Perpendicular: a number of the benches have fine poppyheads, one of which represents St. Michael weighing souls and another St. George and the Dragon: the pulpit is Jacobean: the iron ring handle to the door leading from the porch into the church is deserving of notice and of careful preservation: the font is octagonal, and three of its panels are enriched by geometrical tracery and the five others bear shields of arms: within the sacrarium is a large black marble slab bearing a shield of arms and inscription to Sir John Jacob, of West Wratting, Baronet, d. 31 March, 1740; a similar slab commemorates the Rev. Abraham Oakes LL.D., J.P. a former rector of this parish and son-in-law of Sir John Jacob, bart. d. 22 June, 1756. The chancel was rebuilt during the incumbency of the late Rev. William Mayd MA. rector from 1827, when also a south aisle was added and the interior substantially restored: in January, 1896, a new organ was provided: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £410, with 38 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Ayling, and held since 1896 by the Rev. William John Ayling. The rectory house, at the east end of the church, was built by Sir John Jacob baronet, of West Wratting, for his son-in-law, the Rev. Abraham Oakes LL.D, of Trinity College, Cambridge, who held the rectory, jointly with that of Long Melford, and was the author of many valuable religious tracts. Among the rectors of Withersfield was Vincent Peirse, prebendary of Norwich and chaplain to James the First and Charles the Second, who died in 1673, and was buried in the choir of Norwich Cathedral; Bardsley Fisher, master of Sidney College, Cambridge, 1703—4, and vice-chancellor, died while rector here, and was buried in the chapel of that college: another of the rectors was the Rev. Thomas Barnard, master of the Grammar School at Leeds and a kings chaplain, who died in 1782, and was interred on the north side of the churchyard, but forbade any epitaph to be placed over his remains; an inscription in Latin, was, however, eventually placed to this rector by one of his parishioners on the east face of the pyramidal tomb, built for himself in the north-west corner of the churchyard. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1893. There are charities, one consisting of 3 acres of land, producing £1 10s. a year, which is applied to church expenses; the donor is unknown; the proceeds of another charity, bequeathed by the late Miss Heylin, and consisting of £100, invested in Consols, producing £10 yearly, are distributed in coals and clothing, with the exception of £1 which is applied to the Sunday school. An account of Roman antiquities found at Withersfield is preserved in Davy’s Collections, 19,103, copied from Cole’s MSS. xxxi. pp. 91, 92, where are drawings of nine articles found in 1759. Charles Foster Ryder esq. of Little Thurlow Hall and Scarcroft, near Leeds, Yorkshire, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay. The crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, peas and roots. The area is 2,452 acres; rateable value, £2,610; the population in 1891 was 634.

National School (mixed), erected for 150 children; average attendance, 115.
