Historical Description
WOOLVERSTONE is a parish and village on the south bank of the Orwell, 7 miles from the mouth and 4 south-east from Ipswich station, in the South Eastern division of the county, Samford hundred, petty sessional division and union, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Samford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Michael, standing in the centre of Woolvarstone Park, consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the chancel, which is in the Decorated style, was thoroughly repaired and restored under the direction of the late Sir G. G. Scott R.A. at a cost of £1,000, defrayed by Mrs. Berners, when a window was inserted to the memory of the Rev. Joshua Rowley and his wife, the parents of Mrs. Berners: in 1889—90 the church was thoroughly restored, reseated and enlarged, at a cost of £5,000, defrayed by the late Capt. Hugh Berners R.N. d. 1891: the east window filled with stained glass in memory of the late John Berners and his wife, and a new organ provided: there are 200 sittings. The registers date from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, consolidated with that of Erwarton, net yearly value £384, with 78 acres of glebe, in the gift of Charles Hugh Berners esq. and held since 1869 by the Rev. Frederick Wood MA. of Trinity College, Cambridge, who resides at Erwarton. The Rev. Frederick William Doxat B.A. of Oriel College, Oxford, has been curate in charge since 1899. Woolverstone Hall, the seat of Charles Hugh Berners esq. D.L., J.P. is a large stately mansion, standing in a well-wooded park of 400 acres, extending to the margin of the Orwell and containing a herd of fallow deer: the mansion was erected in 1776 by the late W. Berners esq. then owner of the street in London of that name: it is composed of brick with stone facings, having a pediment in the centre of the principal front supported by four Ionic columns; the curved front next the river commands pleasing views of the river and the Nacton shore through the high trees which adorn the park: the various apartments are fitted with great taste and contain a choice collection of valuable pictures by ancient and modern artists. At some distance from the house is a square obelisk of freestone, 96 feet high, with an ascent in the interior to the top, which is surmounted by a globe encircled with rays: it was erected in 1793 to William Berners esq. who died in 1783, by the late Charles Berners esq. his son. C. H. Berners esq. is lord of the manor and owner of the whole parish, except 30 acres of glebe. The estate belonged to a Mr. Tyson, who became a bankrupt in 1720, when J. Ward esq. of Hackney claimed it as a mortgagee, and afterwards filed a bill of foreclosure in the Court of Chancery, where it remained for upwards of half a century undecided: in 1773 the property was sold under a decree of the Court, and was purchased (for £14,000) by the ancestor of the present owner. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 959 acres of land, 56 of tidal water and 142 of foreshore; rateable value, £1,412; the population in 1891 was 309.
Parochial School (mixed), erected in 1832, by the Ven. H. D. Berners, archdeacon of Suffolk, & rebuilt in 1871 by John Berners esq.; the school will now hold 100 children, having been enlarged in 1889 by the late Capt. Hugh Berners R.N.; average attendance, 57.
