Historical Description

WORTHAM, formerly Wortham-Everard and Wortham-Jarvis, is a widely-scattered village and parish, consisting of five hamlets, Long Green, The Ling, Magpie Green, The Marsh, and The Brook, situated on the river Waveney, which here separates this county from Norfolk; 2 ½ miles north from Mellis station on the Great Eastern railway, 3 south-west from Diss and 6 north-west from Eye, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Hartismere, Eye county court district, rural deanery . of North Hartismere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a large and ancient building of flint in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, south porch, and a circular tower, the largest of the kind in England, and built some 200 years before the church, but now in ruins; the single bell is placed in a wooden belfry at the west end: in 1856 a stone reredos and some tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments were placed in the chancel: and in 1893 the nave and aisles were very thoroughly repaired and reseated with oak benches: the chancel has also been reseated, and there are now 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, with 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Kings College, Cambridge, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Charles Caldecott James MA. and formerly fellow of that College. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The Poor’s Land consists of 5 acres left in 1623 by T. Churche, for “a perpetual yearly reliefe for the poor of Wortham”; it now produces £4 7s. 10d. yearly. Wortham manor, the seat of Miss Betts, is an ancient mansion, situated in a well-timbered park; the gardens and other plantations are tastefully laid out, and the Waveney flows through the grounds: the house contains some fine pictures by ancient and modern masters, books, old china, and other family relics; and has been the seat of the Betts family since the year 1490. This place is noted for its fine geese, ducks and poultry. Miss Betts, who is lady of the manor of Wortham Hall, George Holt Wilson esq. of Redgrave, who is lord of the manor of Wortham Abbots, Lord Henniker, George Symonds, Charles Goodrich, John Ekins and Henry Jas. Graham esqrs. are the chief landowners. The soil is of a mixed description; subsoil, clay, brick earth, with some sand and gravel. The crops are generally on the four-course system. The area is 2,416a. or. 2p. and 270 acres in common &c.; assessable value, £2,749; the population in 1891, including the workhouse school, was 852.

A School Board of 5 members was formed in 1881; S. Newson, Diss, clerk to the board.

The National Schools were transferred to the School Board in November, 1881.
