Historical Description

Yaxley is situated near the northern extremity of the county; about four miles to the south-west of this village a preceptory of Knights Templars was founded by Sir Robert Burgate; granted first to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, and afterwards to John Green and Robert Hale.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

YAXLEY is a parish and village on the Norwich road, 1 ½ miles west from Eye terminal station on a branch from Mellis and 1 ½ east from Mellis station on the main line of the Great Eastern railway and 4 south from Diss, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hartismere hundred, petty sessional division and union, Eye county court district, rural deanery of North Hartismere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The Mellis and Eye railway passes through the village near the church. The church of St. Mary is an interesting building of flint and stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave with clerestory, south aisle, north and south porches and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: the north porch is remarkably fine, the interior having a groined ceiling, springing from angle shafts, with a parvise over: the pulpit and seats are of carved oak: the east window is stained, and the ancient glass it contains having been re-arranged, was uncovered Sunday, July 17th, 1886: these fragments, dating from 1199 to 1549 (and later), were for the most part, collected from various windows in the church: in the chancel and south aisle are four brasses to the Yaxley and Felgate families, and in the belfry is preserved an interesting example of the curious machine known as “the Sexton’s Wheel,” similar to, but less perfect than the one in Long Stratton church, Norfolk: the church was restored in 1868, the late Sir E. C. Kerrison bart. defraying the cost of the restoration of the chancel: there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £90, gross yearly value £159, net £137, with 39 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Society for the Maintenance of the Faith, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Charles Barnard Nash Assoc, of Kings College, London. The Yaxley town estate, of 11 acres, is let in 26 allotments for about £70 yearly, it being for the reparation of the ornamentation of the church. The charities are £4 from the Yaxley Hall estate, left by Francis Yaxley, 8s. left by one John Roe, and 8s. left by a John Clarke; these amounts are distributed in money in February. There is also a sum of £1 13s. 4d. for repairing the highways. Yaxley Hall, a mansion in the Elizabethan style, situated on an acclivity half a mile from the village, is the residence of Mrs. Welch. Lady Bateman is lady of the manor of Yaxley and Lord Henniker and others are proprietors of the land. The soil is a rich alluvial deposit of the drift; in which, when the railway cutting under the Duke’s bridge was made, the fossilised vertebrae and paddles of huge saurians, as well as fine ammonites, were found, and are now in the possession of the vicar; coins of a pre-Christian period have also been met with: the vicar also possesses a collection of specimens of the different birds of the neighbourhood. The subsoil is chiefly clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 1,263 acres; rateable value, £1,528; the population in 1891 was 335.

Parochial School (mixed), managed by a committee; for 60 children; average attendance, 55.
