Historical Description

The village of Yoxford, about two miles to the north-west of which is Sibton, a village, in which William de Casineto, or Cheny, founded a Cistertian Abbey, about the year 1150 and dedicated it to the Blessed Virgin. Its revenues were valued at the dissolution at 250l. 15s. 7d. and granted by the abbot and convent themselves to Thomas, Duke of Norfolk, Anthony Rouse, esq. and Nicholas Hare. It is at present a good old house.

YOXFORD is a parish and village, 1 mile south-west from Darsham station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft line of the Great Eastern railway and 4 north from Saxmundham, in the North Eastern division of the county, Blything hundred, petty sessional division and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of South Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The village, which is lighted with gas, stands on the old road from Ipswich to Lowestoft and Yarmouth, and on the river Yox, or Minsmere, and is surrounded by a beautiful country, interspersed with many gentlemen’s seats. The church of St. Peter is an ancient structure of flint, with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and embattled western tower with small spire containing 6 bells: there are several ancient brasses and monuments to the Blois, Brooke and other families: the church was enlarged in 1837, at a cost of £1,200, and was thoroughly restored and re-seated with |open benches in 1868, and now affords 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £120, with 5 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of S. Causton esq. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Michael Davey Lines. The Wesleyan chapel here was rebuilt in 1889 at a cost of £1,150, and affords 200 sittings: there is also a Primitive Methodist chapel. The Mechanics’ Institute has a reading-room and library of over 1,500 volumes. There is a local Horticultural Society, which holds a show every July. Cockfield Hall, the seat of Sir Ralph Barrett Macnaghten Blois bart. D.L., J.P. is a mansion in the Tudor style, standing in a well-wooded park, through which flows the small river Yox, or Minsmere. Grove Park, the seat of Thomas Lomax esq. MA., D.L., J.P. is an ancient brick mansion surrounded by pleasure gardens and well-wooded park. The Rookery is the seat of Edward Leigh Heseltine esq. Egerton Bagot Byrd Levett-Scrivener esq. of Sibton Abbey, is lord of the manor of Sibton with its members; the Earl of Stradbroke is lord of the manor of Darsham with Yoxford, and Sir R. B. M. Blois bart. is lord of Yoxford with its members. The principal landowners are Sir R. B. M. Blois bart. T. Lomax esq.| Edward Leigh Heseltine esq. and John Kendall Brooke esq. of Sibton Park. The soil is mixed and heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas and beans. The area is 2,724 acres; rateable value, £4,873 10s.; the population in 1891 was 1,047.

A School Board of 5 members was formed in 1882; Geo. Newson, clerk to the board & attendance officer.
