Historical Description

ABINGER is a parish, 4 ½ miles south-west from Dorking, 3 south-east from Gomshall station on the South Eastern railway and 28 by road and 37 by rail from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, first division of the hundred of Wootton, Dorking petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dorking, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. James is an ancient fabric of stone and rubble, chiefly in the Norman and Early English styles, the western portion, however, appearing to be the original Saxon church: it consists of chancel with aisle, nave, south porch and а small belfry at the west end, with spire and containing 3 bells: the church was restored in 1880, and contains some beautiful stained windows and a new organ: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £453, net income £343, with 92 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of William John Evelyn esq. J.P. and held since 1877 by the Rev. Thomas Prince Hill M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The charities for distribution amount to about £100 yearly. Abinger gives the title of baron to the Scarlett family. Parkhurst is the seat of Lieut.-Col. Thomas Herbert Lewin. Abinger Hall is the residence of Sir Thomas Henry Farrer bart. J.P. W. J. Evelyn esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor, Lieut.-Col. Thomas Herbert Lewin, Sir Thomas Henry Farrer bart. J.P. and Lee Steere esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is chiefly sand; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 7,543 acres; rateable value, £8,101; the population in 1881 was 1,172.

May’s Green, 5 miles south of the church, and Wallis-wood, 6 miles south, are in this parish.

In 1877 the remains of a Roman villa were discovered in a field close to Abinger Hall; these included the walls and foundations and a considerable quantity of broken tiles, pottery and tesserae, with some coins of Constantine, Faustina &c.
