Historical Description
Addington, which was anciently written Edintune. It is situated at the foot of a range of hills, to which it gives its name.
On the brow of the hill towards Addington is a cluster of tumuli, about 24 in number; they are of no great height, the largest of them about 40 feet diameter: the greater part of them have been opened. Salmon says, that some broken pieces of urns, which had been taken out of them, were in his time in the possession of an apothecary at Croydon.
A part of the manor of Addington is held by a very singular species of grand sergeantry, viz. by the service of presenting a dish of pottage to the king, on the day of his coronation.
Addington church is but a small structure, consisting of a nave, a chancel, and a small south aisle, separated from the body of the church by plain pointed arches and massy ancient pillars of rude workmanship. The tower, which is at the west end, is low, square, and embattled; it was originally composed of flint, but has been almost rebuilt with brick. The church is of flint, except the windows, which are of soft stone. It contains several ancient memorials and monuments. Against the north wall is a large monument, composed partly of marble and partly of alabaster, erected by Sir Oliph Leigh, Knt. to the memory of his father and grandfather. In the upper part of the monument are two kneeling figures of John Leigh (father of Sir Oliph), who died in 1576, and of his wife Joan, daughter and heir of Sir John Oliph, Knt. Under the other arch are figures in the same posture of Nicholas Leigh, the grandfather, who died in 1565, and of his wife Ann, daughter of Sir Nicholas Carew: underneath are the effigies, as large as life, of Sir Oliph Leigh, who erected the monument, and died in 1611; he is represented completely armed, and leaning on his elbow. The effigies of his lady Jane, daughter of Sir Thomas Brown, of Bletchworth, is beneath, and the whole is enclosed with iron palisades.
ADDINGTON, in Domesday called “Edintone,” is a village and parish on the Kentish border, 13 miles from London, 3 ½ south-east from East Croydon station, 10 from Victoria station and 2 ½, east from South Croydon station, in the North Eastern division of the county, Wallington hundred, Croydon petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Croydon, archdeaconry of Maidstone and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary is a small edifice of brick, faced with flint, in the Norman and Early English styles, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower of flint containing a clock and 4 bells: in the church are brasses to John Leigh, 1509; his widow, Isabel (Harvey), 1544; and to Thomas Hattecliff, 1540; Nicholas Leigh, 1565, and Anne (Carew), his wife; a costly monument of alabaster and black marble, with effigies, to John Leigh, 1576, and Joan (Olliph), his wife; and another, with effigy, to Sir Joseph Leigh and Jane (Brown), his wife, 1611: there are also memorials to Alderman Barlow Trecothick, lord mayor in 1770, d. 1775, and to Grizzel, his wife, d. 1769; to Archbishop Manners-Sutton, d. 21st July, 1828; Archbishop Sumner, d. 15th August, 1874; and an altar tomb to Archbishop Howley, d. 11th February, 1848: the exterior of the church was repaired by Alderman Trecothick in 1773 and by Archbishop Howley, who refaced the whole exterior in 1843, a new font and porch being erected at the same time: in 1876 the church was restored and a north aisle and vestry added, at a cost of about £5,000; and since the restoration, memorial windows have been erected to Catherine, wife of the late Archbishop of Canterbury, who died on Advent Sunday, 1878, to the Rev. Craufurd Tait, only son of the archbishop, who died May 29, 1878, and to Mrs. Johnson: there are 280 sittings, 50 being free. In the churchyard are the gravestones of Charles, first Viscount Canterbury G.C.B. Speaker of the House of Commons from 1817 to 1834, d. 21 July, 1845, Archbishop Longley, d. 27 October, 1868, and of Archbishop Tait, his wife and son. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £173, net £200, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, built in 1867, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Townsend Webb Mylne. The charities amount to £7 8s. yearly, Addington, at the time of the Domesday survey, contained two manors; one belonging afterwards to the Knights Templars; the other, known as “Bardolphs,” was given by William I. to his cook, by tenure of presenting a dish called hastias, at the coronation, and at the coronation of George IV. W. Spencer Leigh esq. then lord of the manor, presented a dish of pottage: the manor was sold in 1808 by William Coles esq. to Archbishop Sutton, as a summer residence instead of Croydon; Archbishop Howley made it his chief residence and greatly improved the park; the original house was on Castle Hill: a second mansion was built at the foot in 1403, but removed in 1780, when the present manor house, about half a mile off, was finished: in 1830 Archbishop Howley added the chapel, library and other rooms: it is still the country seat of the Archbishops of Canterbury. The park, comprising about 500 acres, is well wooded, and was greatly improved by Mrs. Howley during Dr. Howley’s tenure of the archbishopric. On a hill near Croydon is a cluster of 25 tumuli, one of which is 40 feet in diameter: on Thunderfield Common is a circular encampment of two acres, with a double moat. The archbishop is lord of the manor. The chief landowners are Charles Hermann Goschen and Lewis Loyd esqrs. and Col. Sir John Farnaby Lennard bart. The soil in parts is gravel and sand, in other parts clay; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are cereals and roots. The area is 3,359 acres, a considerable portion of which is woodland; rateable value, £6,133; the population in 1881 was 667.
