Historical Description
ALFOLD (or Aldfold) is a parish and village, situated partly in Sussex, 4 miles west from the Baynards station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 9 south-east from Godalming and 1 east from the Surrey and Sussex canal, in the South-western division of the county, hundred of Blackheath, Guildford and Godalming county court district, Guildford petty sessional division, Hambledon union, rural deanery of Godalming, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Nicholas is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, with arcades of two arches, aisles, north and south porches and a small western tower with spire, containing 3 bells: in the chancel, which is divided from the nave by an oak screen, is a piscina, and a monument to Francis Donington, dated 1693: the east window is stained: in the church is an old oak chest bearing the date 1687 and the names of the churchwardens of that period: there are 200 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1658, marriages from 1659. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £258, net income £178, with residence and 17 acres of glebe, in the gift of Capt. Cecil Norton, and held since 1879 by the Rev. William Henry Fisher M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Here is a Baptist chapel. The Earl of Onslow is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are John King esq. Mrs. Luttman-Johnson and trustees of the late Jonah Oastler esq. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, oats, turnips and mangolds. The area is 2,960 acres in Surrey and 290 in Sussex; rateable value, £2,476; the population in 1881 was 540.
A School Board of five members was formed in 1874; William Charmain, clerk to the school board & attendance officer.
