Historical Description

ASH is an extensive parish on the borders of Hampshire, with two stations on the Farnham and Alton branch of the South Western railway and two on the Reading, Guildford and Reigate branch of the South Eastern railway, 8 miles west from Guildford, 3 ¾ north-east from Farnham, 2 ½ from Aldershot, 36 from London, in the North Western division of the county, first division of Woking hundred, Guildford petty sessional division, Farnham union and county court district, rural deanery of Guildford, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Peter, originally Norman, is a building of flint, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch, and a western tower with spire reaching a height of 100 feet and containing 5 bells: the oldest part of the church is the south porch, which is Late Norman: in the nave is a modern screen, a copy of an older one; and an arcade of two arches, with a screen separates the chancel from the south aisle: the chancel windows are Decorated and Early English: there are two pre-Reformation brasses to the Manory family: the south aisle was formerly the nave of the old church, and is divided from the original chancel at the east end by a very fine arch of chalk: the old chancel retains a piscina: the church was thoroughly restored in 1865, at a cost of £3,000, and has 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1580. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £338, with residence and 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of Winchester College, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Albert Octavius Walsh M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. A temporary iron church, dedicated to St. Mary, was erected at Ash vale in 1885, at a cost of £360. There are Wesleyan and Congregational chapels in Ash vale, and a Wesleyan chapel in Ash street. The charities amount to £25 yearly for bread. The Basingstoke Canal is 1 mile distant. To the north are large commons and downs; to the south the chalk range. The manor of Ash belonged to the Abbey of Chertsey and came into the hands of Henry VIII. when he took their estates: it was afterwards granted to the College of St. Mary at Winchester, to which it now belongs. The principal landowners are Winchester College, Arthur Whieldon esq. and H. M. Chester esq. The soil is in some parts sandy, covered with heath, in others clay, and very fertile; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and mangolds. The parish contains 4,784 acres; the rateable value is £12,516; the population in 1881 was 1,926. Part of this parish is in Wyke ecclesiastical parish.
