Historical Description
ASHTEAD is a parish and village, situated on the road from Epsom to Leatherhead, with a station three quarters of a mile from the village on the Leatherhead and Epsom railway, miles north-east from Leatherhead, 2 miles south-west from Epsom and 16 miles from London, in the Mid division of the county, hundred of Copthorne, Epsom petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Leatherhead, archdeaconry of Surrey and diocese of Winchester. The church of St. Giles, standing in Ashtead Park, is a stone building consisting of chancel, nave, north transept, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing 8 bells, placed in 1873, on its restoration; the roof is of cedar, panelled and richly carved: the stained east window was brought from a convent in Flanders and there is a memorial window erected by the late Hon. Mrs. Howard, to the Rev. William Legge, 42 years rector, d. 1873; there are also monuments to the family of Howard: the church contains 260 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1662, but is much mutilated. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £447, net income £325, with residence and 10 acres of glebe, in the gift of Sir Thomas Lucas bart. and held since 1887 by the Rev. Francis Granville Lewis Lucas M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is also an iron church, near the station, with sittings for 150. There are almshouses for eight poor widows, with an endowment of £44 yearly, originally founded in 1736 by appointment of Lady Diana Fielding, and since enlarged and rebuilt. There is also a charity of £23 13s. 8d. left by David White for educational purposes: a charity of £16, left by Mrs. Sarah Bond, for the poor; and a charity of about £30 left by Mr. H. J. Smith, of London, also for the poor, and two or three small charities. Ashtead Park, the seat of Pandia Ralli esq. covers an area of 200 acres, and is finely timbered and well stocked with deer. The soil is marl; subsoil, flint and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats: to the north is a large district of common and forest. The area is 2,522 acres; rateable value, £10,837; and the population in 1881 was 987.
