The pleasant village of Banstead, where the celebrated downs of the same name begin. It is famous for containing many juniper trees.

BANSTEAD is a parish, with a station 1 ¼ miles north-west from the village on the Epsom Downs branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, in the Mid division of the county, Epsom petty sessional division, union and county court district, first division of Copthorne hundred. Leather-head rural deanery, Surrey archdeaconry and Winchester diocese, and within the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Police, 2 ½ miles from Sutton, on the road to Reigate, 16 from London by railway and 15 by road and 3 south-east from Epsom; the Downs are celebrated for the fineness of the turf and are noted both for coursing and hunting; the prospect from these Downs is very extensive and includes views of London and Windsor Castle; here are many good residences. Part of Banstead forms Kingswood ecclesiastical district. The church of All Saints, dating from the 13th century, is a structure faced with unbroken flints, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches, and a western tower with spire containing 6 bells: the church has been repaired and reseated at a cost of about £3,000: the south aisle was rebuilt at the expense of the Lambert family, of Banstead House; Garratts Hall chapel and the tower restored at the expense of the late John Lambert esq. and the chancel by the rector and the late Earl of Egmont: there are 300 sittings, 70 being free. The register dates from the year 1547. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £242, net income £140, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Egmont, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Robert Fitzgerald Uniacke M.A. of King’s College, Windsor, Nova Scotia. The charities amount to £83 yearly. The London County Lunatic Asylum, situated on an elevated plateau, on Banstead Downs, and opened 26th of March, 1877, is a structure of white brick, consisting of fourteen blocks, with a chapel, and will hold 2,000 patients; the land comprises 117 acres; gas is manufactured on the premises, and the water is obtained from a well sunk through chalk and softened by Porter Clark’s process. Nork House is the seat of the Earl of Egmont; Well House, of D, H. Lambert esq.; Garratts Hall, of Frederick Lambert esq. and Banstead Wood the Hon. Francis Henry Baring. Robert Bickersteth esq. is lord of the manor of Banstead-cum-Membris, the Earl of Egmont owns the manors of North Tadworth, Preston and Burgh; Perrotts manor, which has belonged to the Lambert family since the time of Henry VII. is now owned by D. H. Lambert esq. and South Tadworth by Sir Charles Russell Q.C., M.R. The principal landowners are the Earl of Egmont, the trustees of the late John Lambert, D. H. Lambert, Uvedale Lambert and Fredk. Lambert esqrs. Hon. F. H. Baring, Sir Charles Russell kt. Q.C., M.P. and H. C. O. Bonsor esq. M.P. The soil is light; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, peas, turnips, potatoes and mangold wurtzel. The area is 5,557 acres; rateable value, £12,306; the population in 1881 was 3,826, including 1,688 in the asylum.

The school for pauper children of the Kensington & Chelsea district, erected here in 1880, on an eminence commanding a fine view, is arranged on the cottage home principle; the buildings comprise 9 homes for boys Sc 14 for girls, with chapel, school, workshops, steam laundry, swimming baths & probationary wards, superintendent’s office & residence; Frederick Harston is the superintendent.

A School Board of 5 members was formed in 1874 for Banstead & Kingswood united district; J. G. Morten, jun. clerk to the school board, Sutton; Henry King, attendance officer, Tadworth, Banstead.

Board School, Tadworth, built in 1875 at a cost of £2,500, for 220 children; average attendance, 160.
