Historical Description
Beddington, a pleasant village, respectably inhabited. The Roman road to Stane-street and Sussex passed through this parish.
The manor of Beddington was possessed for a very long period by the ancient family of Carew. The manor house, situated near the Church, is a handsome brick structure, occupying three sides of a square. The centre consists of a spacious hall, with an elegant gothic roof of wood. Upon the great door of the hall is a curious ancient lock, very richly wrought; a shield, with the arms of England, moving in a groove, conceals the key-hole.
In August, 1599, Queen Elizabeth visited Sir Francis Carew, at Beddington, and remained three days; she was here again in the same month in the ensuing year.
Sir Francis Carew planted the first orange trees seen in England. Sir Hugh Platt, in his Garden of Eden, tells an anecdote which shews the pains Sir Francis took in the management and cultivation of his fruit trees:
"Here will I conclude," says he, "with a conceit of that delicate knight, Sir Francis Carew, who for the better accomplishment of his royal entertainment of our late Queen Elizabeth of happy memory, at his house at Beddington, led her majesty to a cherry-tree, whose fruit he had on purpose kept back from ripening at least one month after all cherries had taken their farewell of England. This secret he performed by straining a tent or cover of canvass over the whole tree, and wetting the same now and then with a scoop or horn, as the heat of the weather required; and so, by withholding the sun-beams from reflecting upon the berries, they grew both great, and were very long before they had gotten their perfect cherry colour; and when he was assured of her majesty’s coming, he removed the tent, and a few sunny days brought them to their full maturity."
Beddington church is a spacious structure, consisting of a nave, two aisles, and a chancel; at the west end is a square tower, with buttresses embattled. This church is supposed to have been erected in the reign of Richard II. At the west end of the north and south aisles are some ancient wooden stalls. The font is of an early date, large and square, supported by four pillars. The pillars which separate the nave from the aisles are plain, and of rude workmanship. In the chancel are several brass figures of the Carew family, the ancient possessors of the manor, on flat stones; the inscriptions of most of them are gone. The tomb of Nicholas Carew and Elizabeth his wife is quite perfect.
Against the wall of the north aisle is a tablet, in a wooden frame, with the following quibbling epitaph:
"Mors super virides montes."
"Thomas Greenhill, borne and bredd in the famous University of Oxon, Batchelor of Artes, and sometymes student in the Magdalen Coll. steward to the noble knight Sir Nicholas Carew, of Beddington, who deceased Sept. 17 day, anno 1634."
Mrs. Gee, the proprietor of Beddington Park, still keeps a pack of harriers, the former establishment of her deceased husband.
The river Wandle, deviating from the footpath, serpentines behind Beddington church and house, and passes down the park into the grounds of Mr. Kilburn.
The road from this place to Mitcham is by Beddington Corner, and is a nearer way than through Carshalton.
The country here is delightfully varied with wood, water, hill and dale; and to all persons fond of field sports, this neighbourhood will afford much pleasure.
The Hare and Hounds at Waddon (about a mile from Beddington) offers every accommodation to man, horse, and dog.
The hamlet of Wallington, in the parish of Beddington, at the time of making the Doomsday Survey, gave name to the hundred; it was afterwards called Croydon hundred, but has of late resumed its original appellation. The hamlet is situated on the banks of the Wandle, and is more populous than the village itself.
In a field near the road is an ancient chapel, built of flint and stone. The stone work of the windows is entire. On each side of the east window, which has been stopped up, is a niche of rich Gothic architecture; and in the south-east corner is a third for the holy water. From the appearance of the windows, and the niches above-mentioned, the building seems to be of considerable antiquity.
BEDDINGTON is a parish and village, situated on the river Wandle, which here turns several mills, and is 10 miles from London, 2 south from Mitcham, 1 ½ miles west from Croydon and about half a mile west from the Waddon Railway station, on the Epsom branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway; there is also a station in Beddington lane, 2 miles north, on the Wimbledon and Croydon line; the parish is in the North Eastern division of the county, Wallington hundred, Croydon union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Beddington, Kingston archdeaconry and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. Mary is a picturesque building of flint, some parts of which are of the time of Richard II. and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with one pinnacle, containing a clock and 10 beIls: a fine screen of oak divides the chancel and nave, and there is an Elizabethan pulpit, some stalls with curious misereres, and a Norman font, besides many memorials of the Carew family, including an altar tomb, with brass effigies, to Sir Richard Carew, ob. 1520, and his lady, and another tomb to Nicholas Carew and Isabella his wife: in the chancel is a monument in the Classic style, with arms, to Elizabeth, wife of William Chapman, and another to Admiral Sir Benjamin Hallowell Carew G.C.B, d. 1836, besides memorials to Thomas Greenhill B.A.Oxon, d. September 17th, 1624, and to the Gee family, 1815—28: in the north aisle a painting in 13 panels, representing “The Day of Judgment:” there are thirteen richly stained windows, one of which was inserted in 1874 as a memorial to Samuel Wilberforce D.D. bishop of Winchester: the walls and ceilings of the church are elaborately decorated in colour: the church was restored in 1852, and a north aisle added at a cost of £3,000: in 1869 an organ chamber and vestry were added, the chancel entirely restored and numerous other improvements made, at a further expenditure of about £10,000: there are 600 sittings, 200 being free. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, yearly value from tithe rent-charge £1,297, with glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1864 by the Rev. Alexander Henry Bridges M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford, hon. canon of Winchester and rural dean of Beddington, who resides at Beddington House. The hospital of St. Mary, Beddington, consisting of eight almshouses in the Bute road, has been erected on land given by Andrew Collyer-Bristow esq.; the almshouses are for married couples or single persons of Beddington and Wallington who are over 60 years of age. In 1862 four houses were erected by public subscription, in memory of the Rev. James Hamilton, 19 years rector, other two being in memory of Sir Henry and Lady Bridges, of Beddington House, by the Rev. Canon and Caroline Matilda Bridges, their son and daughter-in-law: another house was built in 1870 by Dr. Culhane, in memory of his late wife Frances, and another, completing the quadrangle, by Mrs. Marianne Hamilton (in memory of her late husband); Mrs. Hamilton left an endowment of £1,000, to which the Rev. Canon Bridges added £1,000 in 1877; the sum of £75 has also been invested for the special purpose of providing dinners for the inmates on Christmas-day, Ascension-day and the festival of All Saints. At Russell Hill, overlooking Caterham Junction station, about two miles beyond Croydon, in this parish, are the Warehousemen and Clerks’ Schools, founded in the year 1854 for orphans and necessitous children; these are extensive buildings, holding 300 scholars. Beddington Park was an ancient seat of the Carews, who under the name of Carru, rented the manor so early as the year 1353; the manor house was rebuilt in 1709; Sir Francis Carew first planted oranges here, from pips brought over by his nephew, Sir Walter Raleigh: in August, 1599, Queen Elizabeth visited Sir Francis Carew and remained hero three days: in 1866 the house, celebrated for its beautiful hall, carefully restored and preserved, was purchased, together with 20 acres of land, for the Female Orphan Asylum, removed here from Lambeth, and in 1865 the mansion was altered and converted to its present purpose, the hall being retained; this is a fine apartment, 61 feet long by 32 wide, and 46 feet in height; the interior is wainscoted with oak, and has a rich open-timbered roof; besides the hall, there remains part of the ancient garden, the stables and other buildings; the institution is calculated to hold 200 orphans; the average number is 140. The endowed charities produce £76 yearly. Beddington House is the residence of the Rev. Canon Alexander Henry Bridges M.A. and Beddington Place, of Andrew Alfred Collyer-Bristow esq. The principal landowners are James and Norman Watney, Vernon James Watney, Claude Watney, Thomas Broadhurst Puckle, Andrew Alfred Collyer-Bristow, Edward Henry Beddington, Maurice Beddington, Hyam Beddington, and Joseph Trollope esqrs. and the Rev. Canon A. H. Bridges M.A. who is lord of the manor. The soil is light gravelly; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, lavender, herbs and medicinal roots.
