Historical Description

BETCHWORTH is a village and parish, situated on the river Mole, having a station one mile north from the village on the South Eastern railway, 3 miles south-west from Reigate, 3 east from Dorking and 26 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, Reigate hundred, petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, Reigate rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone, in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave, aisles, south and west porches and a south-east tower containing 6 bells: on the north side of the communion table is a fine brass to William Wordsworth, formerly vicar of this parish, dated 1533: here is also an ancient oak chest: in 1885 a superb pulpit of marble and glass mosaic was erected, the gift of Joseph Maynard esq.: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1658. The living is a vicarage, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £161, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Charles Evatt Sanders M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. Charities of £95 yearly value are distributed in bread and clothing. Lime is burnt here and bricks made. The works of the Dorking Grey Stone Lime Company in this parish give employment to a large number of the inhabitants. Betchworth House, the manor house of East Betchworth since the Conquest, is the property of Mrs. Goulburn, who is lady of the manor and the impropriator of the great tithes. Mrs. Goulburn and Sir Benjamin Vincent Sellon Brodie bart. are the chief landowners. The soil is chiefly light; subsoil, sand and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,714 acres; rateable value, £11,383; the population in 1881 was 1,779, including Brockham.

Gadbrook Common is a mile and a half south-east; More Place, the residence of James Richard Corbett esq. is a mile east; Wonham Manor, the seat of the Hon. Mrs. Way, is half a mile east, now occupied by the Misses Marjoribanks; Broome Park is the property of Sir Benjamin Vincent Sellon Brodie bart. but is occupied by Mrs. Dobson.
