Historical Description

Bletchingley is about five miles from Lingfield, a little to the left of the road. It is a borough consisting of about sixty small houses; the right of voting is burgage-tenure, and the lord of the manor’s bailiff was the returning-officer; but by a resolution of the House of Commons in 1723, he was deprived of that office; and the borough now sends two members to parliament, without a mayor, constable, or any other legal officer, who can claim the exclusive exercise of that authority. Bletchingley sent to parliament 23rd of Edward I. The right of election is in the burgage-holders only, without the bailiff. The number of these burgage-holders is ninety; but they are all the property of an individual.

The town stands on a hill, on the side of Holms- dale, with a fine prospect as far as the South Downs and Sussex; and from some ruins of its castle which are still visible, though overgrown with a coppice, there is a prospect into Kent and Hampshire.

The Church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a large handsome building; the low square tower contains eight bells, and had formerly a lofty spire 170 feet in height, covered with shingles, but burnt with lightning in 1606. The church consists of a nave with a south aisle and a double chancel, and a transept called Ham Chapel. The south chancel is entirely occupied by the magnificent monument of the first Sir Robert Clayton and his lady, with their whole length figures in marble. He is represented in his robes as Lord Mayor of London, with the insignia of his office.

In this church also are interred the remains of Dr. John Thomas, Bishop of Rochester, who died in 1793, aged eighty-two years. Dr. Thomas succeeded Dr. Herring, afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury, in this rectory, which he held till his promotion to the See of Rochester in 1775.

Here is also a Free School, and about eleven alms-houses. The ancient manor-house called Bletchingley Place stood in Brewer Street, and was the residence of Edward Duke of Buckingham, beheaded by Henry VIII. It was pulled down by one of the Earls of Peterborough, but the porter’s lodge has been transformed into a farm house.

Here is a Charity School for twenty boys, and an Alms-house.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BLETCHINGLEY (or Blechingley), once a borough and market town, sending two members to Parliament, is a parish, situated on the road from Redhill to Westerham, 3 miles east from Redhill junction, 3 north-west from Godstone railway station, 1 ½ east from Nutfield station and 5 east from Reigate, in the South Eastern division of the county, Tandridge hundred, Godstone petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, rural deanery of Crodstone, archdeaconry of Kingston and diocese of Rochester. The church of St. Mary, an edifice of stone, dating, from the early part of the 13th century, consists of chancel with south aisle, commonly called the Clayton chapel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower containing a clock and 8 bells, which have been rehung in a new oak frame; the earliest portions are the tower, tower-arch and chancel, but the upper part of the tower was built after the church was struck by lightning in November, 1606: the interior was thoroughly restored in 1870, and has 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £998, net yearly value £800, with residence and 90 acres of glebe, in the gift of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and held since 1888 by the Rev. William Chatterley Bishop, jun. M.A. late fellow of that college. There are Wesleyan and Congregational chapels. The Cemetery, one acre in extent, with 8 mortuary chapel, is under the control of a burial board of 9 members. Here are four almshouses for widows, erected by the late Miss C. M. Perkins; each inmate receives 1s. 6d. weekly. A charity of about £70 yearly, arising from a gift bestowed by deed in 1641 by Henry Smith, alderman of London, of a bullock, to be given to the poor on St. Thomas’ day, is now expended in clothing. Castle Hill is the residence of James Norris esq. Here was formerly a castle, which appears to have been an important fortress, and was for several generations the property of the family of De Tonbridge; it was demolished after the battle of Lewes and there are now but few remains of it; the lines of the outer and inner moat, however, are still visible, and excavations made by the owner, J. Norris esq. have exposed a portion of the wall and the foundation of one of the towers. Pendell, or Pendhill Court, a large Elizabethan mansion, built in the year 1624, standing in a picturesque and well-wooded park, is the residence of Sir George Macleay K.C.M.G. Fairs are held on the 10th May and 2nd November in each year; the latter for cattle. Godstone Union workhouse is situated in this parish. The chief landowners are Alfred Harrold Lloyd esq. Henry Lambert esq. James Norris esq. the Rev. Charles Fox Chawner M.A. Sir George Macleay K.C.M.G, who is lord of the manor, and Major Butler. The soil is a rich sandy loam; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 5,605 acres; rateable value, £11,108; the population in 1881 was 1,856.

A School Board of 5 members was formed in 1873; William Brooker, clerk to the school board & attendance officer.

Board School, built in 1874, for 300 children; average attendance, boys, 79; girls, 71; infants, 56.
