Historical Description

BUCKLAND is a parish and village, situated on the road from Reigate to London, 25 miles from London, 2 west from Reigate and 1 ¼ miles south-east from Betchworth station, on the South Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, Reigate hundred, petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, and in the Reigate rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, rebuilt in 1860 at a cost of over £2,000, is a building of ironstone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a small western tower containing 5 bells: the whole of the windows are stained: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The benefice is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £228; net income £399, with 72 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of All Souls College, Oxford, and held since 1883 by the Rev. George Fitzclarence Slade M.A. formerly fellow of that college. The charities amount to £26 9s. yearly, arising from lands and money left by Denton, Brown and Cook, and including a sum of £16 5s., derived from a rent-charge of £2 4s. 10d. bestowed by deed by Henry Smith, alderman of London, who died January 30, 1628, and distributed in clothing. Buckland Court, the seat of Henry Clutton esq. is pleasantly situated near the village. Francis Henry Beaumont esq. who is lord of the manor and Henry Clutton esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, clay and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 1,356 acres; rateable value, £4,658; the population in 1881 was 401. Hartswood is a detached part of this parish, in the ecclesiastical parish of Sidlow.

National School, built in 1862, & since enlarged for 90 children; average attendance, 60.
