Historical Description

BURSTOW, situated on the Sussex border, is a parish 2 miles south-east from Horley station, on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 27 ½ from London and 7 south-east from Reigate, in the South Eastern division of the county, Reigate hundred, petty sessional division and union, Redhill and Reigate county court district, and in Reigate rural deanery, Kingston archdeaconry and Rochester diocese; it was formerly a peculiar of Canterbury. The church of St. Bartholomew is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, south aisle, south porch and a western tower with pinnacles and spite containing 4 bells: it was restored in 1884 at a cost of about £2,000 there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1547. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £421, net income £400, with residence and 52 acres of glebe, let for £58, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Thomas Burr Sikes M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford. Here is a Baptist chapel. The charities, amounting to £32 yearly, are derived from benefactions by Cooke and J. and H. Hamborough and a bequest by Henry Smith, alderman of London, who died January 30, 1628, and are for clothing. Burstow Hall is the seat of John Jesse Tustin esq. The principal landowners are Alfred Howard Lloyd esq. of Harewood, Bletchingley, who is lord of the manor, Hector Gurdon Rebow esq. and Phillip Saillard esq. The soil is loam; subsoil, Wealden clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, peas and vetches. The area is 4,760 acres; rateable value, £6,967; the population in 1881 was 1,199: these figures embrace that portion of Burstow which forms a part of the ecclesiastical parish of Outwood.

A School Board of five members was formed in 1874, with Bletchingley & Nutfield as contributories, each sending two members: George Carter Morrison, Reigate, clerk to the board; Francis Fairman, Horley, attendance officer.

Board School, Smallfield, built in 1860, for 125 children; average attendance, 83.
