Historical Description

BYFLEET is a parish and village, near the Wey river and Basingstoke canal, with a station on the London and South Western railway, 2 miles south-west from Weybridge station, 5 south from Chertsey and 21 from London, in the North Western division of the county, Godley hundred, Chertsey petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Woking, archdeaconry of West Surrey and diocese of Winchester, adjoining Weybridge. The village is supplied with water by the West Surrey Water Company. The church of St. Mary, an edifice in the Pointed style, supposed to have been built in the 14th century, is an edifice of rough stones and flints, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle, north porch and small wooden belfry at the west end containing 3 bells: in the church is a brass to the Rev. Thomas Taylor, formerly rector of this parish and some monumental tablets: there are 370 sittings, 347 being free. The register dates from the year 1698. The living is a rectory, average yearly value from tithe rent-charge £238, with residence and 60 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Granville Erskine Money M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. St. John’s mission church, situated at Byfleet Corner, is a small iron structure, erected in 1872, and has 200 sittings. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The charities are Lady Bruce’s, of £21 yearly and H. Smith’s, of £16. Here is a rose-water and essential oil distillery, in the occupation of Mr. John Newland, and also an extensive brewery carried on by The Friary, Holroyd and Healy’s Brewery Company Limited. The site upon which Byfleet mill now stands is mentioned in Domesday Book. Henry Brettle esq. is lord of the manor. Hugh F. Locke King esq. and Admiral Hon. Francis Egerton are the principal landowners. The land is fiat; soil and subsoil principally sand. The chief crops are cereals. The area is 2,044 acres of land; rateable value, £10,549 5s.; the population in 1871 was 915 and in 1881, 1,261, including 247 in the Surrey Industrial school.

Parvis Bridge is a quarter of a mile north-west of the River Wey; West Hall, half a mile south-west; Sheerwater, 2 miles west, adjoining the Basingstoke canal.

G. Cavendish & Miss M. A. Lloyd, hon. secretaries.

National (mixed & infants), built in 1856, for 190 children & 60 infants; average attendance, 174 children & 50 infants.
