Historical Description

The village of Capel, is seven miles from Horsham on the left of our road, and near it is Ockley, where are the moat and keep of an ancient castle. Here was formerly a custom of planting rose trees, over the graves of lovers, by the survivors.

CAPEL is a village and parish, situated on the road from Dorking to Horsham, extending to the Sussex border, with a station (Ockley and Capel), 1 mile west from the village, on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 6 miles south-by-east from Dorking and 30 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, second division of the hundred of Wotton, Dorking petty sessional division, union and county court district, Winchester diocese, Surrey archdeaconry and Dorking rural deanery. The church of St. John the Baptist, erected about 1250, is a building of stone, principally in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south and west porches and a turret at the west end containing 6 bells: the chancel was restored in 1852 and a stained window placed as a memorial to James Tschudi Broadwood esq. of Lyne and Margaret Schaw, his wife: during the year 1865 the nave and spire were thoroughly restored and a north aisle, organ chamber and vestry added: a reredos and font of serpentine marble were given by Edward Kerrich esq. of Arnolds and a lych gate was erected by Mrs. Anne O’Fflahertie, in memory of her husband, the Rev. John O’Fflahertie, and a lancet window to her son, John Bourke O’Fflahertie; a new pulpit and three stained windows were also erected by the family of Charles Webb esq. of Clapham Common, as memorials to himself and his two sons, Charles and John Webb and his daughter, Mrs. Strother; two other stained windows being placed by John Lee Jardine esq.: there are 250 sittings: the churchyard has been separated from the road by a stone wall. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £262, with one acre of glebe and house, in the gift of the trustees of the late Charles Webb esq. and held since 1848 by the Rev. Theobald Richard O’Fflahertie B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Society of Friends have a meeting house here, and there is also a Wesleyan chapel. The charities are of £15 annual value, for bread. There is a village hospital containing ten beds, built in 1864 by Mrs. Charlotte Broadwood, in memory of her husband, the Rev. John Broadwood, late of Lyne during the year 1889 there were 52 patients. Almshouses for six aged couples were erected in 1871 to the memory of Charles Webb esq. of Clapham Common, by his sons and daughters. Arnolds is the residence of Edmund Bayley esq.; Broome Hall, of Frederick Pennington esq. J.P.; Grenehurst, of William Clement Cazalet esq. J.P.; Henfold, William Farnell Watson esq.; Kitlands, Douglas Denon Heath esq. J.P.; and Lyne, Henry Fowler Broadwood esq. The Duke of Norfolk K.G. is lord of the manor and Henry F. Broadwood Lee Steere esq. and W. C. Cazalet and W. F. Watson esqrs. are the principal landowners. The soil is stiff clay; subsoil, blue stone and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats &c. The area is 5,651 acres; rateable value, £11,114; the population in 1881 was 1,340.
